What were your best experience on airports? Do you have any innovation suggestions?
I am working on a business case on a course and where I have to suggest an innovation to an airport, for an airport management company.
The airports they handle are two, greatly different from each other:
1) the first airport is a hub for two airlines and handles ~20MM passengers per year, and sits near to the city, which has around 3MM population. It already has a big retail store and a lot of restaurants, mainly fast food and mainly airside, with little retail/restaurant activity landside. The airport currently has 5 VIP lounges, being two main ones on the center of the terminal (airside), one international and two "express" lounges, located on the middle of the two piers. It has only one terminal with both domestic and international flights, having ~30 fingers, being 4 for international use (convertible to domestic) and all other only domestic fingers. The shape of the terminal is in U, with the piers on each side. From the furthest point of one pier to the furthest point of the other takes around 20 min walking distance, with help of moving walkways. The luggage belts are located on the middle of the terminal, and takes around 10 min walking distance from the furthest point of any pier. The airport site is huge and contains car dealerships, one hotel and a small college, and has space to grow. Any investment must have a payback of no more than 15 years. It has around 10 international flights, and the rest is domestic.
2) the second airport is located on a smaller city, is not a hub, handles ~2.5MM passengers per year and sits ~25km from the city, which has around 1.5MM population. It has some retail and restaurants, also mainly fast food and mainly airside. The airport has no VIP lounges. It has only one terminal in linear shape, with 8 fingers, 4 of which being international (convertible to domestic) and all other only domestic fingers. The airport site is huge but its location and the economy of the city are not propitious for development. It has around 3 international flights, the rest being domestic, and some cargo dedicated aircraft operation. Any investment must have a payback of no more than 15 years.
The company which handles the airports does not want any capital intensive investment as it is still amortising the construction costs of both airports, so I was thinking in something not very complex focused on passenger experience, capable of generating revenue or at least favouring it by means of improving passenger comfort and convenience and growing the available spending time they have at the airport.
