If There are Slots available (JFK/UA)

Tue Nov 26, 2019 3:13 am

Airlines start/end JFK service all the time. There are slots lying around. Is there a whole assortment of through-the-day slots for a widespread operation all at once? No. But there are slots available.

If United is serious about wanting to return to JFK

If there are slots available

Why not re enter the market with a handful of flights and build up over time as slots open up?

UA only needs 10 or so slots for LA and SF. Why not put a toe in the water?

While I don't disagree with your suggestion, I think until the MAX situation is resolved, starting a new station the size of what JFK would need to be is just not feasible. UA doesn't exactly have a bunch of airplanes sitting around or slack in their fleet to cover multiple daily transcon flights. Any limited spare capacity at the moment could likely be put to more immediate, more profitable use elsewhere in the system.

I do think UA will return to JFK someday. Might be good to strike now while AA is a hot mess and pulling back at JFK but, again, limited resources.

AA isn't willing to give up their terminal at JFK that easily either. Although they're doing something to fill it up at least (mostly with their Oneworld partners).

While UA does say they want to return to JFK, I don’t think they actually do really care about returning. JFK to SFO was unprofitable for UA for years meanwhile EWR is their most profitable route...
