Would you rather fly 747 or 777

Mon Dec 09, 2019 1:16 pm

For those that happened to have flown both the 747 and 777, if given a choice, which aircraft would you prefer flying and why? Am genuinely curious.

747 because the queens days are numbered, and I'll be able to fly 777s for another 30-40 years.

747! My first ever flight was on a NW 747 TPAC flight. Still vividly remember the amazing feeling when I set my foot on the 747. It is more of a nostalgia, but it'll be with me forever.

747 - by far

The 747 is more quiet engine noise wise. Wind noise is only in the upper deck inferior.
Both airplane are equipped with 10 abreast seating in economy class. The 747 has 6,08m interior width for that while the 777 hast only 5,82m. That is exactly 1 inch per person wider seats in the 747.

Apart from those technical differences, the Queen will always be the Queen and there is hardly any more beautiful airplane left to fly with these days than the 747.

747 in the nose, being able to see what is coming is something we will probably never get to experience again...Except by camera/IFE and it's not the same.

Always a 747.

Done around 60 747 flights over the years, all -400 variants. Sat in economy in the body of the plane (always felt wide), sat upstairs in economy (Air France) and this always felt a more peacful way of flying in the cheap seats. Flew business in the cone (too noisy because of the nose wheel and wind noise) and flew business upstairs (the best). Upstairs business always feels niche; quiet, private and wonderful to climb the stairs. Used to like the little window boxes for extra storage and the storage area for your bags to the rear upstairs.

Done around 50 777 flights (200 and 300) and whilst its a great aircraft (love the noise of the GE90s on take off), you just can't beat a 747.

Probably only get a couple more rides on the queen before she goes; had an impromtu ride back from Atlanta on a Virgin flight when weather cancelled my KLM flight recently. Off to Delhi in the near future on a KLM 744.

747 any time.
Far superior ride (even in turbulent weather). Wider cabin. Much more favorable cabin noise levels. Two decks. Feels bigger. Looks stunning.

I didn't find a ton of difference when it comes to the y seats, but I'll be another check box for the 747. Mostly nostalgia from my USAF days and then just after. All were tatl to frankfurt one was transcon EWR -SFO. Landing at night in SFO, prettiest night landing I can remember.

747 for sure. Lovely aircraft that will only still be around for a few more years. I was on a BA 744 from LHR to ORD about 3 weeks ago. First 747 for me in a while. Loved it!!

The 747 for sure. Probably the smoothest ride out there although I hear the A380 is just as good or better. I haven't had a chance to ride on the A380.
The 777 is to me one of the worst planes out there for passenger comfort due to its loud cabin. In that regard a quad will always be nicer than a twin although the new twins aren't too bad either.

Always the 747. Had so far 8x 748 and 3x 744 (also each once in upper deck) as well as 4x 77W and 1x 772. The jumbo just seems much more interesting with its four engines and nothing beats the upper deck experience.

Me too I would pick a 747 for that reason. However, I flew on an American 777-300ER for the first time ever from LHR to JFK last Summer and I was happy. I picked that one although I would have preferred a BA 747 because it was the best air fare I was able to find on aa.com. I was initially disappointed not go get the 747 but flying for the first time on a 77W, a very modern aircraft, was a great experience. At the very last minute at the gate, I got upgraded from Row 41 in the Main Cabin to Row 17 (or 18 don't remember exactly which) in Economy Plus. Great flight with nice amenities.
Last time I flew on a 747 was six years ago, with BA from LHR to JFK.

First flew on a 747-100 in 1975. I was 13 years old. TWA JFK-LHR. I remember the pilot noting we were up at FL 45 and i swear you could almost see the curve of the Earth.

Flown on 747's a number of times since. Nothing beats the queen of the skies.

I find the 777 noisier than the 747, also colder. Go figure. I had no idea my last Queen flight was all the way back in 2000 - ended on a high though, bumped up to business class for the one and only time in my life :)

I have flown on an A380 of Thai Airways 5 or 6 times now and all but 1 landing was excellent, couldn't even feel the aircraft touch the ground, the 1 landing that wasn't excellent we hit the ground so hard I initially thought the pilot broke the wing off the aircraft LOL, but I still prefer the 747 over the A380.

I'll echo what several others already said. If I was booking a flight today and had that choice, I would pick the 747 because I know the 747 won't be around for much longer. I'm sure I'll have plenty of chances to fly on 777s in the future.

777, as the 747 (at least 400) aircon is so noisy. But I prefer 787 to 777.

Greetings Folks,an interesting number of comments. The 747 appears to be the choice of "Y" users however after having flown, over the years, in the 100/200/300/ 400 and the SP as compared to flights on 777.200/300 in "J" there is little to compare.I guess it is a matter of horses for courses!
No matter what aircraft is involved the opportunity to "fly" to points known and unknown is one of life's experiences.
Cheers, 325i.

Over the last five years or so I’ve sat in various seats and come roughly to this preference if the seats are all the same standard: A340, A380, B747-8, B747-4, A330, B767, B787, A300 with the B777 being my least liked current widebody, mostly because I dislike the the particularly loud air conditioning noise.

As far forward as possible in all the above is preferred, mostly due to being quieter, the exception being the upper deck of the 747 where the back of it is far quieter and thus my preferred seat on it. Looking forward in the nose of the 747 is also a great experience.

Is it aircon or aerodynamic noise? I thought it was the latter, but happy to be shown otherwise. 3 of my 4 upcoming longhaul sectors are 777 for the first time in a few years (A350 for the other) after a few on 787. I really don't miss the older planes if my aim is to get somewhere rather than collect types.

I’d echo this. Flew on a 773 for the first time in September (LHR-MIA on AA) and found it a nicer experience than I expected.

Next Trans-Atlantic will be on a 744. DEN-LHR (BA). As much as I still get a kick seeing a 747, I’m not a fan of BA’s product.

I’d prefer the 777 over the 747-400 mainly cause most cabins on the -400s still flying seem a bit dated (huge fan of mood lighting). I’d love to try the 747-8 though. As cool as the GE90 is it’s also not as quiet as the 4x CF6 on the 747. In that regard BA’s RR-powered 777s are great

The A380 is considerably more comfortable to fly on, even for non-aviation geeks like us.

It isn't even close.

Anyone who'd prefer a 747 over an A380 is doing it for nostalgic reasons.

I noticed that

The RR powered triple at BA is noticeably quieter and smoother than its GE counterpart

As a frequent flyer of KLM 777's and 744's I always prefer the 747.
Especially in business class the advantage of the 747 is more pronounced : You have a choice between the small section A (Fwd of entry doors L1 and R1) and your own private Narrow Body fuselage on the upperdeck.
I always prefer the maindeck option, because of the lower noise level, compared to the upperdeck.
In the 777 business class you are with too many people in the same room, so your "private feeling" is far less than in the 747.
Also in Yclass the 10 seat/row of the 747 feels less crowdy than the 777.
Next year in January- February I will probably make my last flights with KLM 744's, scheduled KL735/736 AMS-CUR-AMS.
Operating a twin over the ocean, you're always one engine failure from a total emergency.

So my first long-haul flight was earlier this year, between YYZ and FRA on Luftansa… Was able to fly on the 747-400 as my first ever widebody. It’s always been a dream of mine to fly on that aircraft, so it was a bit surreal to walk into that plane and just see how massive it was.

Comfortable flight… When we touched down, hardly felt anything aside from vibration. So used to flying around the US in 737’s (or smaller) that the difference was significant!

It’s also insane looking out at that wing with how large it is, holding those pair of engines. It’s beautiful.

On the way back from FRA, we were originally booked on a UA 787-10. But equipment swap resulted in us with a 777-200, which is an aircraft I also really wanted to fly on. So fortunately, I got to fly on both of them weeks apart. The 777 was fantastic (mostly due to all 30 passengers or so on the flight back home…!) but lacked the “wow” factor of the 747 in the cabin. It was noisier, as well.

I’d pick a 747 over the 777 at any chance I could... Now I hope to catch a flight on an A380 before they go bye-bye...

I first flew on a 747-200 in 1972, Salisbury-Luanda-Heathrow on SAA. I was 11 years old.

Since then I have flown on every variant except -100, SAA had 200, 300, 400, SP and a couple of years ago after a long break from 747s I flew LH 748i, what a let down. Maybe it was the fact that neither of our IFE sound was working and the in-flight service was just, mehh, or that we have gotten so used to EK that anything else is a disappointment.

Anyway, for those of you who haven't flown on a 747, main deck on a 380 is pretty much the same.

Regarding the 777, DL 3-3-3 is so much better than EK 3-4-3 especially on JNB-ATL which is 16 hours and always full.

So to answer the question at hand.... today, I prefer 777. Unless the 747 is an SP.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...
