Biggest airline rivalries of the world

Sat Dec 14, 2019 3:28 am

The UA / AA rivalry and some responses to that topic had me thinking outside that duo and the US to other historic and ongoing airline rivalries

Which do you think have been most prominent, fiercely pursued and still going to this day around the world

And who, if any has prevailed ?

The ME3 jump to mind, as do China Airlines/Eva Air, JAL/ANA, Asiana/Korean Air, Easyjet/Ryanair, British Airways/Virgin Atlantic, as far as rivalries that still exist go. Many have resulted in the demises of some airlines, such as Mexicana going against Aeromexico, or Varig and TAM.

Politically, the US3 vs. ME3, but no comparison on product quality, sadly.

What about Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific? They seem to compete with similar networks, geographic proximity, and until recently (no slam to Cathay) but on service. Thoughts?

BA/VS would be the most obvious one
JL/NH same
CI/BR
AC/WS
KE/OZ
SK/DY
ET/KQ
LatAm brands/Avianca brands

I'd also toss in CX/SQ, who have a unique competitive dynamic between the two of them, both served from powerhouse city-state bases with no "domestic" market.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil

I’d like to throw in Jetblue/Alaska and Spirit/Frontier/Southwest as well.

JetBlue and Alaska have only a handful of markets where they compete for traffic. AS/DL is a much more heated rivalry.

How about QF-NZ ? They have like rival groups. NZ-SQ-VA vs QF/JQ w/ other subsidiaries, competing in the Oceanic area.

Aer Lingus vs Ryanair

Willie Walsh vs Michael O’Leary

During the early 2000s this developed into a fierce rivalry, Michael O’Leary had met his match in the newly appointed Aer Lingus boss, Willie Walsh. At the time, Aer Lingus had transformed itself into an aggressive low fares airline following its fight for survival and positioned itself for all out war with Ryanair.

The rivalry played out in Irish media for years and the two men were even invited onto Ireland’s most popular chat show for a good old fashioned slanging match. Walsh accepted but O’Leary was a no show which resulted in a full advertising campaign by Aer Lingus claiming Ryanair and O’Leary were running scared from an invigorated Aer Lingus.

Walsh soon left Aer Lingus after disagreements with the Irish government while O’Leary had better things to be getting on with as Ryanair rapidly took over Europe. Once Aer Lingus was privatised in 2006 however, O’Leary set his sights on them once more with the first of three failed take over attempts. In the end it Walsh who got his hands on Aer Lingus via the IAG take over in 2015.

Today, the two airlines have a faux rivalry in Ireland, they compete on numerous routes but in reality they are quite comfortable side by side...for now.

QF and VA are certainly a rivalry.
NZ however is now a partner with QF, with VA going solo on their limited Tasman network.

KE and OZ are competitors but not rivals. KE is almost twice bigger and OZ has never come close.

I would say JL and NH, certainly. The former as the first and the flag carrier once had dominated but later fell into bankruptcy, while the latter as a challenger won the battle and is the larger one now.

Up to a point, perhaps. But there were routes, for example Athens ATH which was served by TWA only, either due to a “gentlemen’s agreement”, or due to FAA regulations. The service lasted fifty years from 1946 to 1996. In the end the two airlines even wanted to merge in order to survive but sadly, permission was not granted.

Historically SQ and MH. They both came about from the split of MSA. For years there was a rivalry over which one was the most prestigious carrier.

Has to be BA/VS. Whether its Bob Ailing and the "dirty tricks" campaign, the "No way BA/AA" campaign by VS, VS then ratting BA out on the price fixing collusion to escape prosecution themselves, Willie Walsh and his ice bucket challenge quip naming Richard Anderson, the CEO of Delta at the time, as "the man who effectively owns and controls the Virgin transatlantic business", even quips about each others flight attendant uniforms. The rivalry and hatred has been ingrained in the two organisations for decades and shows little prospect of ever changing despite the changes at the top.

Internally between the US3 / US majors. Rarely have I seen such a toxic rivalry. It is among both employees and enthusiasts to boot.

That was the first one that came to my mind when I saw the title of the thread.
Back in the 80's, CO/UA in DEN was a bitter rivalry - funny that they're now together
