Adopt an Airline

Thu Dec 26, 2019 8:45 am

So my fellow a.netters. if you were to be given complete control of an airline, what airline would you take and how would you run the airline (it could be management, costs, aircraft, destinations, features)?

“American Airways” based in DFW using a fleet of 100 A380+ in an all-first class configuration in a 1-1 configuration with virtual windows, virtual reality, showers, hot tubs, and a buffet.

This airline will fly a 10x daily service to LHR, HND, SYD, JNB, DXB, GRU and AUS. This airline will also operate a daily AUS-ICN/LHR/GRU/ATL/CDG flight.

American Airways will also have 2 A350-1000XLRs for a daily SYD-KEF flight.

This airline will have a low-cost subsidiary called “American Airlines” with a fleet of 420 Airbus A220-300s that feature an all-economy class configuration arranged in a 3-3 setup with 27” of pitch. There will be IFEs at every seat.

I'll take any airline, just need the operating certifications and maintenance approvals really. Ground crews will be splendidly awesome and flight crews will look great. Ground minions will get free lunches, air crews will get shiny toys, and the maintenance department always has beer in the fridge for the end of shift de-brief. Proper bar will be installed in each airplane, good quality hardwood bar designed and built by someone with talent and stocked with all the finest things. Also hot dog bars, regular dogs for the commoners in economy and chili cheese smokie dogs in first class. A smoker corner with fluffers. And blackjack and poker tables. Destination won't matter, we could just do circuits and it will still be a time.

Lufthansa.

- Halt permanently all A340 retirements.

- Permanently revert back to the old livery and remove the New livery from existing aircraft as soon as practicable.

- Order lots of CS300 for A319/320 replacements.

- Configure the 777-9Xs with 3-3-3 in economy.

- Reverse the long haul catering changes and create the option of a softer bread for Y catering.

- Begin widebody service to Nice: ideally at least once daily with an A346 and at least twice daily with an A359.

- Put D-AIPA in a museum when it's time for retirement.

- Begin services to Australia with A350-1000 aircraft from Munich.

BA.

I'd order a load of A223s for A319 replacements and stock up on NEOs for the European fleet (some of BAs aircraft are very old after all).

Improve the European product. It's really not as good as it should be considering BA was once possibly the most prestigious airline out there. Maybe introduce the A223s on premium heavy routes with a "proper" J product in a similar vein to the CRJ-550.

Long-haul would be to make the new 777X and A350 fleets relatively premium heavy and refit the 787s as a higher density configuration. I'd keep the A380s until they break and maybe get a couple of used ones for the routes where bums on seats is a priority.

Alaska. I want a couple daily BLI-ROC non-stop so I can go visit family and friends wherever I want, without putting up with bullshit that is SEATAC.

Also, Nonstops to PDX and Bend/Redmond for dsytrips.

Virgin Australia.

Replace the 737s with 737 MAXes, and the 777s and A330-200s with A350-900s.

This should allow a relatively consistent Economy product.

A350-900s should have a 3.5 class config (Economy, EconomyX, Premium, The Business), and perhaps so should some of the 737-10s (the ones used for Transcon and Trans-Tasman especially).

A350-900s will do BNE/MEL/SYD - HKG/HND/LAX. Everything else can be done with narrowbodies and/or codeshares with the relevant airlines.

Alitalia for sure ... I could do some very creative spending from A to Z and not worry about it since the Italian Government will cover without blinking an eye all the depts I will certainly make! Alitalia would be the launch customer for the A380-900XLR with an order of 99 aircraft and an option for 1 more. We would deploy them on intra-European routes with very poor load factors so that we could use our 5 new A321 NEO base model on busy and Hi-yields transatlantic sectors with a refuelling stop either in Gondar or Tenerife Nord depending on the destination. We would also buy 150 737 MAX equipped with MCAS v1.0 for the Italian market. I am sure we can get a sweet deal on those from Boeing ... authorities don't need to know that, don’t they? Finally We would put an A380-900XLR on the FCO-PSA-FCO since I am tired of the usual Embrear 175.

I’d take Emirates and pull a frank Lorenzo and sell it all off, and rid the world of it. I’ve flown EK 20 times and every time the staff were ruder then hell, the planes are ugly and the food was cold and my bags were always a day late. I love Dubai and I go several times a year, but I’ve yet to have a decent flight experience on EK. And the money I received we be used to finish the other airport in Dubai, and tear down the DXB and sell the property of to some other real estate guru to build another worlds tallest tower.

Halt all 747 and MD-11F retirements, too. Bring D-ALCN out of storage and use it for "vintage promos" or something.
And launch MUC-SAN nonstop.

Delta (again this is just my imagination)

- Halt all MD-80/MD-90 retirements and bring the last MD-90 and MD-80 ever built out of storage and return them to service.
- Move back to NRT
- Use the 748I on former 744 routes (with the A359's supplementing) and configure it with all business class

Emirates
-Become own aircraft manufacturer
-Build 10000+ A380 size aircraft with VTOL capabilities
-100x daily flights from DXB to PPT and everywhere else
-Make hub at every single airport like JRO, LHR, and XNA
-Become so big that Emirates becomes the only airline that exists because all flights are $1 and each passenger gets full 10-course meal, hot tub, hotel-size room, chauffeur in Lamborghini Urus to and from every airport

If you haven't figured it out, this is a joke

TG:

-Fully privatize the airline.
-Buy a 100% stake hold in Nok Air(DD) and NokScoot(XW) and launch a merger with Thai Smile(WE), then kill off all three brands in favor of creating a new airline called "Xplore", a Jetblue-esque LCC with PTVs in all seats, with an initial fleet of A320-200, 737-800, 777-200ER and also A330-300 transferred from mainline TG, operating tourist/VFR routes out of DMK, HKT, KBV and HDY to compete with the LCCs on domestic and regional routes.
-COMPLETELY phase out and retire the 777-200, 777-300, 747-400 subfleets and transfer all 777-200ER and A330-300 from the mainline TG fleet and reconfigure them with Thomson Vantage seats in J and 31 inches of seat pitch in Y for the A333 and 77E fleets with the 777 receiving a 3-4-3 seating arrangement in Y.
-Order 8 more A350-900, 12 A350-1000 and 20 A330-900 to replace the lost capacity from the transferred and retired 772/77E/773/744/A333 fleet.
-Order 40 A220-100,50 A320NEO and 30A321NEO to replace the ex-DD 737-800 fleet and to allow more regional flying by both mainline TG and the new LCC with a configuration of an all Y config with PTVs and 30 inch of seat pitch.
-Completely restructure the company by firing non-essential staff and selling all non core businesses.
-Standardize all widebodies to all have the same product in J, W and Y.
-Launch more regional destinations (under both brands) including but not limited to:
SOUTHEAST ASIA: Naypyidaw, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, Sihanoukville, Kuala Terangganu, Langkawi, Johor Bahru, Kuching, Labuan, Kota Kinabalu, Batam, Medan, Palembang, Padang, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Solo, Semerang, Malang, Surabaya, Banjarmasin, Balikpapan, Pontianak, Makassar, Manado, Lombok, Angeles City, Davao
EAST ASIA/ OCEANIA: Jinghong, Fuzhou, Hangzhou, Macau, Zhuhai, Haikou, Sanya, Zhanjiang, Ningbo, Nanchang, Xianyang, Qingdao, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Zhengzhou, Hefei, Guilin, Harbin, Shenyang, Taichung, Shimojishima, Naha, Kagoshima, Kunamoto, Matsuyama, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Shizuoka, Komatsu, Hakodate, Asahikawa, Aomori, Yuzno-Sakhalinsk, Khabarovsk, Vladivostok, Jeju, Cheongju, Guam, Saipan
SOUTH ASIA: Goa, Pune, Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore, Chittagong, Port Blair, Male
- Form JVs with SQ, UA, AC and other *A members.
-Relaunch TPAC flights to LAX, SFO, SEA, YVR, HNL, SAN, EWR, YYZ and ORD
-Obtain ATR72-600s and fly to secondary domestic cities out of BKK and also smaller secondary cities on point-to-point routes (eg. CNX-KKC, HDY-PEN)

Easier yet, just set fire to a pile of money, probably easier, or pull a Swissair move and liquidate the airline entirely and start over with a new airline.

I'd bring back Malév. Always liked the paint scheme, get a decent mix of Emb and Airbus in there to do regional and mid- range flights. Not too crazy different from what LOT are doing in BUD.

Yes, I know, Wizz makes this a pipe dream. I get it.
L101, 733/4/5/8/9, 741/2/3 (never managed 744!), MD 80/2/3/8/90, MD11, DHC8/3/Q4, E170, E195, 757, 77W, 763/4, Travel Air 2000. A300/310, A319/320/321, A333, ATR-72, probably a few others I forget. Passenger, not pilot, alas! BUD based.

You must be flying a different Emirates to me. They are always very friendly to me without exception. The only luggage glitches I've had were some rough handling (damaging a bicycle carbon handlebars) and someone on the ground in Sydney mistakenly taking my bag (but then brought it back).

Even when I was coming back last year injured and bandaged up, they made sure I was okay at every step of they way. Did I need someone to help me through the airport, etc.

The staff on the plane Nice to Dubai last year I was on made that ~6 hour flight seem like it was 1 hour. What a nice friendly bunch of people they were. Really great chatting to them when they were seated in front of us.

I can't say I'd want to adopt any airlines, not a business I'd want to be in. If I were to hypothetically get into that business, it'd probably be someone like Qantas or another airline with large over-water flights and work with a manufacturer to make supersonic flight a reality. I think I'd trust Lockheed or Airbus to make it a reality. They have the experience.

United, here’s what would I would do:

- Cancel the remaining 737MAX orders, and replace them with orders for A220s and A321neos. There’s not enough orders to justify keeping them. Order A220s and A321neos to replace current A320-family aircraft.

- Create a southeastern hub to compete with ATL and MIA (IAH and IAD make poor Caribbean connections for those who live east of IAH or south of IAD). The hub would be located in MCO.

- Build focus cities in CLE and LAS. CLE still lacks regional flights after being dehubbed, and UA could be stronger in LAS.
So... when will the Northwest DC-9s be retired?
