SAN-ELP versus TIJ-CJS: International Competition?

Wed Jan 08, 2020 10:11 pm

Not sure how to word the title, so it won't hurt my feelings if someone can suggest a better title, please do.

Both Southwest and Alaska (Horizon) fly SAN-ELP, and Volaris flies TIJ-CJS.

Is there any other such parallel domestic border city to domestic border city example?

Could Volaris market themselves in the U.S. as a cheaper alternative to WN or AS?

It's just kind of a mind blower for me today.

Volaris is a great airline. I would choose them over Southwest on any day. Maybe not Alaska if the price point is close to same.

But the Volaris specials can be wonderful. I'm sure the price difference is large over a holiday weekend such as 4th of July or Thanksgiving.

If someone is familiar with the border crossings at both ends and has Sentri cards, crossing south to go east is a good option. Just for kicks I checked Volaris for a July 2 to July 7 trip to Juarez. The lowest fare is $67 roundtrip. That's not a typo. Southwest would be at $187 with 1- stop instead of a direct flight.
