Conviasa flights to MGA via PTY and HAV

Thu Jan 09, 2020 4:13 pm

Recently, Conviasa, Venezuela's flag carrier, launched a CCS-MGA route via PTY and HAV.
Nonetheless, it's impossible to buy tickets for this itinerary, at least not directly. One has to buy a CCS-PTY/HAV and then a PTY/HAV-MGA.
This makes the itinerary very expensive, as the CCS-PTY costs 324 USD. CCS-HAV is 399.60 USD. PTY-MGA is 388.80 USD and HAV-MGA 526.85 USD
That makes a CCS-MGA via PTY 712.80 USD RT, and via HAV 926.45 USD. Going via HAV is not only not cost effective, but also not efficient from a traversed distance POV (3451 vs. 2200 Km, 57% more).
Do you know why it is impossible to book full fare from CCS to MGA with Conviasa? Does it have something to do with fifth freedom?
Has anyone taken this flight? It would be interesting to know about this, as it is very seldom to have an airline flying between two countries, none of which it has bases in.
Flights with Copa through Panamá goes from 828$, which is cheaper than going through Havana, but more expensive than the same route with Conviasa.
That probably is the reason behind why Conviasa can afford to have such a high price (similar to a long haul flight), for what it looks like an undeserved route.
In the past, Conviasa launched this route with direct flights from Caracas, but had to close it for what I presume was poor loading (let's agree that Managua, and Nicaragua as a whole is not the most touristic country in Central America, with Costa Rica and Panamá in front, also Guatemala because of the pyramids), neither Venezuela in South America. Also both countries are nowadays under turmoil for socio-political and economic reasons.
Seems like the reason for this, at least in the HAV route, is to capture Cuban travelers looking to buy cheap merchandise in MGA to resell back home.
That would justify the high prices, as Cubans are using this flight for lucrative reasons.
Appreciate your thoughts.
