Your Most Delayed Flights of 2019

Tue Jan 14, 2020 1:16 am

Please state the reason, length, airline, and other relevant info

My longest delay was 3 hours 15 minutes on Southwest 4421 from STL to SLC on 31 December 2019 (N7709A, 737-700). The inbound arrived 1 hour late from sunny Fort Myers and an air conditioning issue resulting in a rolling delay that resulted in the assignment of a new plane.

What are yours?

13 hour delay. AA. DEN-DFW.

Initial plane had an engine issue so returned to the gate and was taken out of service.

Was rebooked on a flight departing 4 hours later, but that (and the next 2) were cancelled due to storms. Finally got lucky. The final flight of the day made it out (13 hours after my original flight had been due to depart).

Four hours delayed departure due to excessive late-spring snowfall. May 21, 2019 on DEN-KEF Icelandair. Scheduled departure 1950 on 20 May 2019, departed just after midnight on the 21st. We sat on the aircraft at DEN for the entire time awaiting de-icing. Thankfully the connecting flight to LHR was being operated by this A/C so, well, there you have it.

My photo of the 757 TF-ISR approaching the gate in Denver speaks volumes. You can see it at: http://www.aeromoe.com/flightlog/flt725.html I noticed my webpage shows the wrong date. I will correct that when I get home.

17 hour delay HKG-DFW.

Our aircraft from LAX had a “mechanical issue” which resulted in a 15 hour delay over there. AA uses its 77Ws on a LAX-HKG-DFW rotation.

Had 4 hour delay on KQ from GVA to NBO.
Inbound arrived about an hour late, we were only about 30 pax from GVA, were bussed to the plane, stood in the bus for about half-an-hour and then taken back to terminal, just told some technical issue, only boarded again about 2hours later...then had to wait to de-ice (probably was standing too long, not sure if it would have been done on normal turn-around). All FCO bound pax were sitting on the plane all this time (routing is NBO-GVA-FCO-NBO). We did the scheduled stop in FCO, which also took 10mins longer than scheduled.
Eventually missed connection at NBO for JNB...it took about 3 and a half hours to get us to hotel, arrived there about 01:30am, waited about half-hour to get to room as well...woke 03:30 again for shuttle to airport 04:00am for new flight at 07:45.
Missed domestic connection in JNB for flight to GRJ, had to purchase new one...all in all arrived home 8hours later than scheduled

I only had one in 2019. My flight from FLL to LAX (AS) arrived on time but my onward flight to SFO on AS was delayed by 3 hours due to the plane being stuck at JFK due to a snow storm. Not a big deal though as I was on vacation and I spent the time at the LAX AA lounge.

20 hour delay due to fume event on the arrival of the aircraft. A320. I read about it almost daily on avherald but didn't think it would happen to me.

JFK-DUS on Eurowings had a departure delay of more than one hour due to ATC, but arrived almost on time .
ALG-FRA on Lufthansa had a delay of about 45min due to heavy thunderstorms in Germany. The connecting flight FRA-NUE had been completely cancelled because of that.

End of 2018 I had a huge delay though: 7 hours on ALG-QSF due to fog at the destination and ILS inop. The flight time was supposed to be 25min...

8 hour delay - DL DTW-MSP; initially due to weather then subsequent diversion and crew time-out
- Left gate on-time, ground stop for MSP due to thunderstorms, 1 hour on ground in DTW
- Took-off, another line of storms developed and sat over MSP, Circled for awhile, then diverted to GRB
- Crew timed-out, had to deadhead in a relief crew from MSP once they could get a flight out from MSP-GRB
- Relief crew flew the flight GRB-MSP; arrived at 3am instead of 7pm

My delays were absolutely nothing compared to others, my most severe delay (!) was with Ryanair from Barcelona to Dublin, caused by the aircraft arriving late from Dublin. It left 44 minutes late and it arrived 18 minutes late.

The latest departure was a Turkish Airlines flight from Dublin to Istanbul, 53 minutes late on departure but arrived 17 minutes late. This was caused primarily by Dublin's congestion.

I had longer delays in 2018 but again, they pale in comparison to what others have posted here.

Was lucky for 2019 only a couple minimal delays.

Most delayed was
JL526 CTS-HND 50 Minutes due to late inbound aircraft. What was impressive was at check in (advised a 30 minute delay at that time) I was offered a JPY500 food voucher and offered to transfer to the previous flight an hour earlier. I turned down the earlier flight because I wanted to fly on JAL's new A350, but was still given the food voucher.

For 2019 the majority of my flights - a good 85%, were early.

My longest delay was 1h 19m on LGW-YYZ, with Air Transat on the A310. IIRC this was due to heavy snowfall the previous night.

Flying WN TPA-PHL. Delay began with ATC hold over Savannah due to thunderstorm delays in the Northeast that extended from Washington to New York. We continued northward after about two hours of bouncing around in circles but subsequently diverted to ORF. While on the ground in ORF, a decision was made to switch airplanes on a scheduled ORF-MCO flight so additional delay to unload and load new aircraft.
Departed ORF and flew direct to PHL after the storm moved thru PHL area and landed 6 hours 19 minutes late at 11pm.
We had limited in-flight service due to turbulence and discovered limited/nil food or drink options in ORF late at night in gate area.
P.S. Arrived at friend's home to discover no electricity. Fixed a sandwich at midnight by flashlight.

48 Hour Delay on HZ 5497 from Seoul (ICN) to Yuzhno Sakhalinsk (UUS) due to a snowstorm at UUS

Flight was operated by Aurora (HZ) Boeing 737-500 RA-73013
Original flight time: 12:55 PM (KST) --> 6:30 PM (GMT +11)
New Flight Time: 1:00 AM (KST) --> 6:00 AM (GMT+11)

Aurora was kind enough to accommodate us at Incheon Airport. However, I will never forget the arrival experience in UUS. We were forced to sit in the cabin for an additional hour after we parked on the stand due to immigration opening only at 7:00 AM

The longest one for me was American Eagle/SkyWest 3003 from SLC to ORD on June 12, which was about 3 1/2 hours late. No reason was ever given, but I suspect it had to do with the GPS outage that occurred that week which was wreaking havoc on certain FMS models (including the one found in most CRJs). Then my connecting flight to IND was delayed by another hour because of weather, plus another 30 minutes on arrival because the jetway wasn't working properly. Between that and the nearly four hours of flying time on CRJs, that was far from the most fun I've ever had on a trip.

Most of my delays were very minor this year, mostly less than 2 hours. Longest one delayed this year? UA862 (773) HKG-SFO in July (or June?), 3 1/2 hour delay. United did break out the potato chips though so all was well. Sadly an angry couple did not appreciate the potato chips as much as I did and started yelling at the gate agents.

I flew 32 segments in 2019. 31 were early or on time. 32 was on OK from PRG-CPH. Our Czech Airlines 319 was swapped for a Smartwings 737. We had to wait for a crew that could fly the plane. Departed 1:45 late.
Up Next: THIS YEAR IS CANCELLED!!!

3 days. SAA JNB-PER. Was a booking issue rather than a delay of the flight itself, but was 3 days in an airport hotel.

24hr delay in FRA on United (to EWR), Flight 961. Our aircraft (787-10) never left EWR so our flight was cancelled. According to United, the flight cancelled due to a bird strike caused extensive damage to the aircraft.

So we stayed overnight at the airport hotel, got a few hundred dollars in travel credits with United and left the next morning on a ‘private’ 772… I say that because there was all of about 32 of us on board I believe it was, since everybody else rebooked, so it was incredible! Well worth the delay for such an amazing flight back home… Being able to lay out across the entire row to sleep, stretch out and of course, immediate/excellent service by the crew. Once and a lifetime flight, for sure.

The picture from my seat, mid-flight…

Hope that was a figurativ speech for about 1K, or is my cash/credits formula incorrect.
