They did not combine airports, though, which would change the numbers pretty dramatically for New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Washington and San Francisco, and to a lesser extent Dallas and Houston.
Combining Miami and Fort Lauderdale to Portland, for example, makes that potentially the largest unversed market. But just imagine all the markets without service to NYC that might have traffic evenly split between LGA/EWR/JFK and don't make the cut here.

Seems ripe for an AA A319 or WN738 for BDL-PHX. I've always thought that ISP is under served given the business community in Long Island, and even leisure traffic to some extent if the price is right.

The No. 10 and No. 19 CSAs have no nonstop between them. That is the top unserved U.S. route. The PDEW would be much bigger if people didn’t have to spend the same time to get to South Florida as it takes to get to Iceland from Portland. I remember a couple years ago when people said a nonstop between Portland and Orlando would never work.

I just looked up the faremeasure.com numbers for IND and IND-PDX is at 169 daily passengers and there is no service. RDU-SAN is listed at 207. I'm surprised that IND-SAN is 290 daily and all IND gets is limited seasonal service.
IND to RDU to OKC in 18 months. This is what my life has become.

I don’t think Faremeasure has been updated in about ten or so years. It’s a dead website. It still has traffic figures from when AirTran existed.

I know that WN has dramatically cut ISP over the years (PVD, BNA, LAS, MDW, JAX, Florida frequencies, etc) but it shocks me that they cut MDW when there’s clearly a demand for that flight + endless connecting opportunities.

BOS-SAT seems like a no brainer for B6 or DL. I wonder how much of that traffic has leaked to AUS, which sees multiple daily flights to BOS.

I believe Faremeasure pulled data from DOT table 6 which would result in combining JFK/LGA/EWR, SFO/OAK, MIA/FLL, BOS/PVD/MHT, ORD/MDW, DCA/IAD/BWI etc

Right from one of the lead paragraphs of the article:
This article doesn’t consider fares, growth rates, or beyond/behind traffic. Only local traffic. Predictably, many of these 50 are east-to-west; they’re longer distance and they overfly many hubs. This creates numerous problems in terms of viability.
That really should serve as a warning to a.netters: Be careful how you use this and interpret the data.
The idea that these are all financially viable, just waiting for Frontier or the return of MAX at Southwest, is just risible. Once-a-days aren't compelling for business traffic. There are lots of reasons we're in the era of ATL/DFW/CLT megahubs.

Interesting that four routes on that list are from SAN.
Given that SAN is not a hub to anyone, I'd venture a guess that the 162 daily between RDU and SAN are split between multiple airlines, with each set of passengers loyal to their FF miles.
If UA, for example, wanted to do a non-stop, they'd need to convince DL and AA flyers to give up their airline just for this non-stop. And, as noted above, PDEW doesn't equal yields, and it ties up a plane for a transcon.

I know 20 years go, WN flew nonstop SMF-MCI.

That route lasted from late 2006 to early 2008 on a 737. Hopefully DL will bring it back on a A220, they've already announced a similar distance ATL-SEA A220 transcon.
