The Breguet 761/763/765 family. What on earth were they thinking of or taking their inspiration from when they designed that?

The Guppies aren't the prettiest flying machines either.

I have disliked the A350-900 for quite some time. The nose looks weird, and the plane feels stubby. The A350-1000 on the other hand, looks well proportioned. I also don't really like the 757-300. It looks anorexic.

The 787 to me is extremely ugly.

The nose just has zero personality and the short stubby landing gear makes it look hideous and disproportionate when on the ground.

Neither of them is a Jet and the Guppies are not even Commercial.

What were they thinking? Hauling as much passengers or cargo as possible. Form follows function. A truck will never look as cool as a Ferrari but it will do the job intended for way better than a Ferrari. The same goes for the A380. Just because it is ugly, it is not useless. Those engineers were not morons.

747, unquestionably. The hump makes what could have been a pretty sleek aircraft, look absurd. And it gets worse the longer the upper deck is.

A380.

But I have to say that the first time I saw a photo of the nose of the A350 I almost threw up a little. It looks like the 787's ugly sister. And you know the people at Airbus had to realize this when they tried to add some mascara to pretty her up. But it ain't working! The A340 was much better looking as far as Airbus goes.

The 707 and 747 are the most beautiful jets IMO (at least as far as sub-sonic jets go).

I was inclined to say something like A380, A310 or A340-200 but I just saw a trip report video on the Cubana IL96-300 and this one is it, hands down.

Everything about this plane looks so unaesthetic and disproportionate, it seems almost ridiculous.
4 hairdryer engines on a plane as long as a 767-300, an awkward-looking door configuration (similar to the A310 which I also dislike), and the abomination that seals the deal for me: The massive vertical stabilizer that looks like it could fit onto an A380 lol

I am no fan of the original, short-top 747, whether the original or the present freighter. It is not at all pleasant to my eye. The extended upper deck “made” the airplane.

The OP asked about JETS, but the Shorts Skyvan had had a lot of mention. Why? it’s a turbo-prop.

787 that nose with the short stubby gear make the thing look really fat, it has such lovely wings but gets let down by its face. The length of the -8 does it no favours, the -9 is a little better and the 10 better still.

I think if NATO ever gave it a designated code word, LEGO would be appropriate.

It saddens me that a company that gave the world handsome but straightforward - looking aircraft like the DCs 4, 6 and 7; the quirky but still handsome DC5, and the DC8s and 9s, both in stretch and original, could come up with a turkey like the -10. Maybe one explanation is that the -10 came into being with a lot of McDonnell involvement, I don’t know.

A380 is ugly, and it is ugly in a spectacularly "American" way even though it is European. What do I mean by that? Think of the elegant lines of a 747, also a big jet. Now think fo the A380 which looks like a fat person trying to fit into clothes to small for him or her.
A 747 is Ashley Graham, where an A380 is, um,
I may be ugly. I may be an American. But don't call me an ugly American.

I never liked the A300 and A310 -- too short and therefore looked too fat. (Rather like the C-17, if we wish to stray into military planes: compare it with the much more graceful C-141.)

The original A340 looked daft with its tiny motors, but that aspect was put right with the 500 and 600 series. There's something not quite right in general about the A330 and A340 (and indeed the A350) which I can't explain. Boeing's equivalent designs -- the 767, 777 and 787 -- do look right, they're the most aesthetically pleasing of all the two-engine wide-body planes, especially the ones with raked wing-tips, and I'm looking forward to seeing the 787-10 and 777-9

I never took to the DC-10 and MD-11 with its third motor stuck up in the tail; on the other hand, I think that the air intake ahead of the tail on the L-1101 looked worse. One can get away with that with a T-tail (Trident, 727, Tu-154) but not with a conventional tail.

I never liked the longer upper deck on the 747, as it made the plane look front-heavy, and the extra-long one on the 8i is worse. Having said that, the 8 series freighter is for me the best-looking 747 of all. The stubby SP was neat, except the rear fuselage, which looked like a bad 'cut and shut' job (which I suppose it basically was).

As for the A380, it's too short and the nose is definitely wrong: it's a pity the flight deck wasn't halfway up, but putting it on a mezzanine would have been impractical.

Old ones: the 707 and DC-8 were for me the classic jet airliners and never really surpassed in appearance, except perhaps by the VC-10 and Il-62.

I always thought the 1011 needed a stretch. It's such an aft heavy looking aircraft, from the wing back. Perhaps a little more fuselage would split things up.

Also the nose is a little abrupt.

For me the 787 got it right, but only mid flight. When the wings are flexed, the nose is up...it's a sight. On the ground it reminds me (by design purposes, not in similarity) of the f15 in that the landing gear look to be an absolute after thought. As if they designed it mid air, then realized it would have to land eventually so they just stuck on some landing gear.

Love: 747 and A330

Hate: A350...the tail looks too thin and the curvature of the fuselage at the tail end just looks off. I've always thought Boeing jets generally won the aesthetics contest. Airbus planes to me always just looked very utilitarian (except for the A330, always thought it a very handsome plane).

A380, by some margin. It just looks stubby and ungainly. If it had another 10m of length added to the fuselage it might be slightly better proportioned, but it still wouldn't account for that ugly front end.

A330neo, both -800 and -900 versions.

The new 'winglets' don't look good from any angle. They look far too small and sort of unnaturally jut outwards when viewed from multiple angles. The actual shape of the winglet is also really odd (as if somebody snapped a bit off of it?). The new engines don't do wonders for it either, it somehow looses the streamlined feel that the A330ceo has.

Just a lot less elegant compared to the A330ceo...

The uglist has to be the 747SP also...737 never sat well with me either too low

Sexiest are 346 (flew SAA last year what a beast) also 744, seeing those birds in hay day was great....

Lastly cant forget 77W...while nothing special is a beast from engine starts..take off...and wide swings when your sitting way down the back

I have to agree with those of you that have posted the Shorts 330. In fact, I called them "flying uglies!" But, our OP asked for a jet.

For me, the ugliest jet was the BAC-111. Too short & fat, especially in American Airlines livery back in the day. But, they always got me where I needed to go!

It looks like 50 % or so are voting for the Airbus A380 as the ugliest jetliner ever.

May I ask you why? I am just curious. Are you sixteen years old and you know no other Jetliners than Airbus, Boeing and Embraer? I just want to know why someone votes for the A380 when there are the likes of Airbus Beluga, Boeing 747LCF and other monsters. Not to forget some of the Sovjet, European and American Jetliners from the ffties and sixties. The A380 is not a beauty. But is it really the ugliest Jetliner for like 50 % around here?

For me aircraft are like women, the A380 might be a bit too large for some but it does often have a bar on board and once you have had a couple too many its more fun to be inside than any of the others.

I would add to that: Why does everybody like the B747? I found it impressing for its shear size when I saw the first B747-100 at HAM as a kid. But today I find that hump just ugly and it became only slightly better with the extended hump on later B747s. I wouldn't call it the ugliest one (and actually I don't care), but clearly uglier than A380 and some others.

Everybody? Certainly not me. The short-humped versions are okay, especially the 747-8F (I won't go as far as say I love it), but the long hump is not aesthetic at all.

An-74, Carvair, Christmas Bullet, A380, A310, C-46 Commando, Brabazon, Saunders-Roe Princess, Tu-114 are ugly to me

Contrary to the opinion of many on this thread, I think the 757/767, 737, MD-80, and DC-8-73 are really good looking.

It's hard to pick a definitive ugly aircraft a few that come to mind

Airbus A380 - I agree with the concensus that it looks quite ungainly, but the spacious cabin is by far the best aircraft to fly long haul on.

ATR42/72 - There's something just so awkward about it's shape. I'm not sure if it's the nose, the tailplane position, or the undercarriage housing bulge.

Shorts 330 - Even moreso than the 360, with the squared off split tail.

And the best looking

Douglas DC-8-62 - In my opinion the best looking DC-8 variant, with the best proportions and streamlined engine pods. Especially in the old SAS viking livery.

Boeing 747-100/200 - Not that the later models aren't good looking, but the original upper deck looks better.

Honourable mentions: Boeing 727, Douglas DC-9, Sud Aviation Caravelle, De Havilland Comet, Lockheed L188 Electra.

What an ugly jet...

Gets my vote as well. If specialized cargo aircraft are included in this 'contest,' between the A300 Beluga and the 747LCF, both are the ugliest.

I prefer Boeing 747s with short upper deck, not the stretched ones. 747-8F is beautiful, -8I not so. I also like the SP. It's short, stubby. But it's cute.

I agree: the long upper deck, especially with the 8i, makes it look front-heavy. The 8F is the best proportioned 747 of the lot, and proper wing-tips and not nailed-on winglets as with the 400 series. As I wrote above, the SP's rear fuselage looks to me like it was done in a back-street workshop, with a chunk chopped out and the two halves crudely welded back together and not quite fitting together.

People having a laugh at the Short 330 or 360 should see the original Skyvan, a real box with wings.
