ok so hopefully Coronavirus will be finished in month or 2.

When Chinese carriers start flying long haul again, surely they'll be dumping seats at crazy low prices to get people back on Chinese carriers.

This will then surely impact most international airlines, or at least those flying North America or EU/UK to Asia/Australia.

eg. the Chinese carriers are typically cheapest if wanting to go Australia to EU/UK

Thoughts ?

From the experience of SARS, those of us in Hong Kong expect this to last until May. You are overly optimistic with the timeframe. We should be more worried about how many Asian carriers will still be standing at the end of all this. At the height of SARS, flights were still operating into HKG, though on a reduced schedule. Now it is basically a complete withdrawal of flights and the ramifications will be much more profound.

will the Chinese govt support their airlines ? (not CX) That's probably the elephant in the room.

Agree this thing is just gaining steam. The incubation period makes it hard to stop.

If the rest of Asia manages to avoid the worst of it you may see cheaper fares into Europe, US, and Australia as airlines try and divert capacity.

But just as easily can see a situation where many of those countries have issues as well and we see a global slowdown.

I flew AKL-SIN just as the SARS epidemic was winding down. I stopped there for two days on my way to LHR. I didn't save anything on the ticket because I had bought a round-the-world fare a few months before, but everything in Singapore was empty and dirt cheap. Hotels, restaurants, shops. I was treated like a long lost relative. The only remotely similar treatment was when I visited France a few months after 9/11. I want to ride the train from Beijing to Tibet, and I may do it as soon as the Corona virus thing seems to be under control. Timing is everything.

Wooww that could be the only time when 5 stars would become affordable (for a college student)
