UA raises checked bag fees to match B6

Did not see this posted anywhere, please delete if duplicate.

United has raised checked bag fees by $5 to match Jetblue's increase from earlier this year. New fees go into effect starting March. This is only for fees paid at check-in. The fees remain the same as before if prepaid before online check-in.

Will have to wait and see when AA and DL bump up their fees.

I’ll bite on this. The most positive thing I will say is that if this is needed to cover the actual costs of transporting the luggage, then fine. Otherwise I see this as a further intrusion into what the customer will tolerate before bad behavior erupts. The industry as a whole is recording amazing profits but the customer experience is literally getting the squeeze. Fees, especially the luggage fees, have become a “tax” on a population with limited options to boost profits and subsidize losses from unnaturally low fares in some ultra competitive markets. It’s a free market and passengers are still tolerating it, but IMHO, fees should be limited to covering the actual cost of the service.

Then you're not advocating a free market. There's no price regulation (in the U.S. domestic market) that says price must reflect actual costs: not in base transportation, not in change fees, not for luggage, not for the alcohol served on-board.

That’s not what I’m saying. I’m simply saying that people are increasingly feeling abused by airlines. My opinion is that it’s in their best interest to charge what it costs for a highly needed service rather than gouge a captive audience with excessive fees. I feel less abused paying $10 for a drink than $40 for checking a light bag, because it’s easier to say no to the drink than to travel without a change of clothing. Airlines love fees because they get extra tax benefits from them so they will continue to grow until they receive enough negative response.
