Fly to AUH vs. fly to DXB + land transport

Sun Feb 23, 2020 6:48 am

I may need to be in Abu Dhabi for some meetings. EY flies from my home airport, while my hometown airline flies to DXB (and I will need the miles to requalify for elite status).

Is it crazy to consider flying into DXB and then taking a taxi/Uber to Abu Dhabi? Does anyone do that?

Thanks!

150km between DXB & AUH, certainly not that far. Don't think it's crazy.

Booking with Emirates means that you are able to take their complimentary shuttle bus services between Dubai and other areas of the UAE, which includes Abu Dhabi. When booking your flight specify that Abu Dhabi is your final destination and it will book you onto this.

Plenty of shuttles that aren't that expected. There's even a bus now. It's no big deal to do.

You are assuming EK is his hometown airline. It could be some other airline. If it is some other airline, there is no complementary bus service. There is a paid service though.

True. According to several sources it varies between $92 to well over $100 one-way. Meanwhile the bus will get you from Dubai to Abu Dhabi for less than $7 one-way. However keep in mind the bus departs from Al Ghubaiba bus station, which is in downtown Dubai. You'll first have to get there on the underground, the bus doesn't depart from Dubai airport. Also the bus needs to be paid for in dirhams, they do not take dollars. The bus departs roughly every 40 minutes excluding at night (there's no bus service at night) and travel time is just over 2 hours.

A Taxi or Uber is far more expensive than a bus, but will offer you greater flexibility. And if you travel in a group you can split the costs. Keep in mind to negotiate the price prior to departure otherwise you'll be ripped off for sure. Better yet, make sure your taxi has a taxi meter. Not all taxis have them.
