Why no AF A380 at YUL / AF upgauge to YVR?

Tue Feb 25, 2020 10:59 pm

With Air France already retiring its first A380 can someone remind me why was the A380 not successful on CDG-YUL?

According to stats almost 400,000 French tourists visit Quebec each year, not to mention the French emigrants to Quebec and vice-versa, as well as connections to Maghreb countries through CDG. If it was going to work anywhere I would have thought on that route.

On another note, YVR-CDG flights always seem full especially in summer. Is AF going to increase to a 77W or A359? Might it depend on whether the CDG-YVR-PPT route they filed ever becomes reality?

Because the market is better catered with twice daily 777?

IAD seems slightly surprising as an A380 destination for AF I must admit.

A380 were too premium for YUL, 9F/80J was way too much to fill every day.

AF is phasing out the whale because they can make a profit out of it. Overestimating the potential of YUL was one of them.

AF will operate 4 X Daily on CDG-YUL this summer 2 x B77W + 2 x B772er

CDG-YVR is usually a 42J 77W in the high season. Guessing there will be a few changes this time around between the end of the A380 and the small flu going around.

IAD seems to have more F traffic than YUL does. Otherwise I'm sure YUL could fill the whale, especially during the high season. But I think its also one of the rare destinations where AF can compete with frequency. Maybe yields were also an issue.
