UA suspends change fees

Wed Mar 04, 2020 3:56 am

Any reservations booked now until the end of the month have no change fees if customers wish to make itinerary adjustments.

I'm hoping that United realizes that this is good customer policy and never brings back the change fees. I would think fare difference should be enough of a deterrent, and it would have minimal impact to the bottom line. I haven't seen any numbers but I can't fathom change fees generating more than $1 million in revenue, which is nothing for an airline that has more than $10 billion in revenue.

I agree with your hope but Delta collected more than $600 million in change fees in just 9 months of 2019. You are probably off by a factor of hundreds for United.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I feel like UA is late to the party on this , hasn’t AA and AS been doing this for a few weeks ?

Two weeks? JetBlue and Alaska were the first to waive change fees and they both announced on Feb 27...6 days ago:

Delta (March 1), American (March 2), and United (March 3) followed suit:

But beware of Delta's waiver -- it only applies to international flights. The other airlines are waiving change fees for all flights.

Just booked a flight on AC yesterday, AC announced they are waiving change fees as of today. I promptly cancelled yesterdays flights and rebooked them for today to avoid the change fees!

Update today (March 4) -- Delta extended it's change fee waiver to all flights instead of just international flights, matching other carriers.

UA just modified things so that change fees are now waived on all travel from now until April 30th, regardless of when the itinerary was booked

https://hub.united.com/united-no-change ... 70555.html

I hope UA becomes a leader in not bringing them back ever again, forcing AA and DL to match. Time for United to be a leader on a customer friendly policy for a change.
