Your List Of Discontinued Routes You Have Flown

Mon Mar 09, 2020 6:40 pm

With the recent news of United canceling XNA-SFO, I thought it would be interesting to read the responses of routes that a.netters have flown that no longer exist, either as a non-stop OR a through-service (like the milk runs or the old triangle routes). Keep in mind, this doesn't mean you can't fly between these two cities, it means that the non-stop route or through-route no longer is flown.

Don't count airports that have closed and been replaced, such as Stapleton. Count only city pairs that are no longer flown.

Here's my list:

1) Fort Smith (FSM) - Old Fayetteville Drake Field - Joplin (JPL) - Kansas City (MCI). I flew this in January, 1975, to connect to a TWA 707 to LAX, then a United 737 to Bakersfield.
2) Bakersfield (BFL) - Santa Barbara (SBA). Part of AA's 1984 introduction of MD80 service DFW-BFL-SBA-DFW and United's SFO-SBA-BFL-SFO service.
3) Bakersfield (BFL) - LAX. Flown since the earliest days of aviation, now a distant memory.
4) San Diego (SAN) - Pittsburgh (PIT). I can't believe Southwest hasn't picked up on this one.
5) San Diego (SAN) - Bakersfield (BFL). It almost feels as though the universe is promoting vicious sarcasm, as it is faster getting to almost every other major city in California from San Diego than it is to Bakersfield, as this torturous drive through the entirety of Los Angeles can be one of the circles of hell. The sarcasm comes from hearing things like, "Fresno-San Diego increases to four times a day!" and "Alaska is not flying from San Diego to San Luis Obispo, Monterey, Fresno, and Santa Rosa!". But SAN-BFL, which ExpressJet flew for almost a year - isn't on anyone's radar.
6) San Diego (SAN) - Washington National (DCA). There is a special place downstairs for the person who continues to "disconnect" San Diego from DCA. We had it, then we lost it to LAX.
7) The above mentioned XNA-SFO.

That would be:

1. Groningen (GRQ) - Gdansk (GDN). Flown on Wizzair.
2. Weeze (NRN) - Milan Bergamo (BGY). Flown on Ryanair.
3. Weeze (NRN) - London Stansted (STN). Flown on Ryanair.
4. Weeze (NRN) - Lanzarote (ACE). Flown on Ryanair.

Those are the only routes I've flown that aren't serviced anymore. Some have been canceled by the airline I've flown, but another airline has picked it up so it's still possible to fly.

I am not counting ISL (Istanbul Ataturk) otherwise the list would be too long. By checking my Excel I can spot those routes. Unsurprisingly a lot of Ryanair because they open and close routes all the time.

CDG-VRN on easyJet
CRL-RYG on Ryanair
FRA-RJK on Ryanair
HHN-GDN on Wizz Air
HHN-IEV on Wizz Air
HHN-RIX on Ryanair
HHN-SOF on Wizz Air
KIX-FCO on Alitalia
LCG-LIS on TAP Portugal
LIS-LCG on TAP Portugal
LYS-LUX on HOP!
MST-TXL on Germanwings
NRN-ACE on Ryanair
NRN-ESU on Ryanair

Are we talking strictly just routes or does airline of choice matter.

For the purposes of this poll, let's stay with routes that, at one time, one could fly non-stop or direct, but now require a change of planes at a third airport. If that route is served by a different airline, it doesn't count, because that route can still be flown.

Interesting points so far - thanks to all the respondents!!

BRE - CPH on OLT
BRE - NUE on OLT
Both on Metroliner. What a cool ride that was!

I don’t know if TMP - ARN still exists. On Saab 2000 - also very nice!

Strictly routes. If the route is served by another airline that means it's still served and therefor doesn't quality.

Oh boy, sadly we're talking a lot of routes. And I really mean sadly, as some of the most interesting ones have ceased as a result of conflicts:

KBP-SIP - I flew this with multiple carriers, from the fledgling WizzAir Ukraine with A320s, to Aerosvit with their B732 and Dnieproavia on the Yak 42.

LHR-DAM - Maybe this will return one day, but it will sadly never again be a B747-SP.

I'm sure there are plenty more unusual ones in my spreadsheet.

I’m pretty sure no one is flying Bos-mke right now. I’ve flown that on a few airlines.

Pvd-isp on southwest is one.

Love how every "travel blogger" says they will never fly AA/Ethihad again and then says it again and again on subsequent flights.

All these routes were flown pre-merger on CO.

IAH-EFD (Ellington Field, Houston, Texas)
IAH-GSO
IAH-BPT (Beaumont, Texas)
FMY-SRQ (back in the day CO would do an IAH-FMY-SRQ-IAH)

As far as I can remember the only one I've got is MIA-LPB (the return however was LPB-VVI-MIA due to the extreme altitude at LPB). AA flew the route until recently. BoA is the only airline connecting Bolivia with the US non-stop now but only VVI-MIA is offered.

I think the only one I've flown that has been completely eliminated is EWR-HAM.

Edit: I just remembered I did fly OAK-IAH on Continental as well. I'm not sure if that counts since Southwest still flies OAK-HOU. Are we counting city pairs or airport pairs?

Hmmm...one I hadn't thought of. Let's go with airport to airport, so OAK-IAH still counts.

SIN-KLO, but I was continuing to CEB, as SilkAir used to make it a tag on to their CEB service. Flight was transferred to Scoot as its own service (SIN-KLO-SIN) a year later but was terminated eventually.

I'm sure there are more but here are some that come to mind for me. Unfortunately, I didn't start keeping detailed logs until about 1997 and they're still patchy for a few years after that.

SDF-IND on USAir (early 1980s)
IND-CVG on Delta (1995)
SDF-DAY on Piedmont (1986-88 timeframe)
DAY-CMI on Piedmont (1988)
DAY-TPA on Piedmont (1986-88 timeframe)
ROA-DTW on Northwest Airlink (2004)
ROA-CVG multiple times on Delta Connection (Comair, likely ASA)
IAH-HOU on Continental Express (1995)
CLE-CVG on Continental Express (1999)
CLE-IND on Continental Express (2000-ish)
IND-STL on American (2002)

Only one for me:

YHZ-YQB (had a quick stop in YQM) back in the 90s. Having to change in YUL means that driving is a more attractive option.

For me, these are the first routes that come to mind:

-US PHL-LGW
-US CLT-SOP
-US HPN-PIT
-MH EWR-ARN
-TG LAX-BKK
-UA EWR-PHL (though, this route still exists for cargo flights)
-KE ICN-NAN

and probably a bunch more...

I had one like that, too. I flew ADD-JED-FRA on LH in 2016, where I stayed on the plane during the stop in JED. Now LH has eliminated the stop in JED flies ADD-FRA non-stop. But Ethiopian still flies ADD-JED and Saudia flies JED-FRA, so I assumed it didn't count since all the airports are still connected. But you have a point -- it's no longer possible to do the exact routing I did without changing planes.

AUH-SFO on EY
AZA-CLD on 4A

CLD-RNO on 4A
CLD-SJC on 4A
DOH-AUH on QR
LAS-PVR on HP (YV)
PVR-SNA on WN
SJC-CLD on 4A
SJC-YYZ on AC (supposed to resume in May)
