Most Complicated Livery?

Tue Mar 10, 2020 4:30 pm

As I was admiring the A380 Honu(s) of ANA, I realized that it must be a complicated process for the Airbus paint team to paint the plane, given the complicated livery. I thought of the same when I saw Etihad's livery on A380.

So that brought up this question in my mind, what are some of the most complicated livery(ies) that has been done so far?

Thoughts??

Nowadays painting is mostly done by computers, therefor it doesn't matter how easy or complicated a livery is. Whatever the airline designs, they print it on the aircraft.

Air Tahiti Nui would be one of the most complicated one.

I read here that AA tail was expensive and complicated to apply due to the gradients.

I would have thought Frontier - all the different animals.
Can I have a mojito on this flight?

Those are just decals printed then adhered to the aircraft.

I would throw in

- Norwegian for all the different faces on their tails
- Fiji Airways for that super complex tail pattern

True. Same with all the people on the tails of Norwegian, which would be just as complicated to paint. Luckily they don't have to paint them. As I said before, the computer does that.

To reiterate, printed, not painted.

Decals or stenciled. Not difficult.

United's battleship grey was very expensive and complex to mask and paint, as was the last Varig...

There are plenty of time lapse videos around to show how quickly it can be done. Usually a mixture of stencils used to accurate paint spraying, and decal-stickers. I have seen laser guidance systems in use also to ensure accuracy.

Etihad's tail is layered, if I remember correctly. That would be quite complex.

The BA tails are pretty complex if you look at them closely

How about the amazing (one-offs?)used by GULF AIR some years ago? Those were beautiful birds adorned in golden and blue arabesque designs...

The new UA tail is pretty impressive and detailed up close, with thousands of dots to creat the gradient-very similar to BA tail in that respect.

Alaska's "More to Love" liveries seemed like they were a bit of a process to paint since there were so many different shades of pink/red needed to be painted in a gradient.

ATN is definitely one of the most beautiful, detailed and hence complicated that I have seen... Surprised to know about AA tail....Thx for sharing..

I wonder if South African B747-300 "Ndizani" and Qantas B747s "Nalanji/Wunala Dreaming" were hard to make.
The ill-fated Singapore "Tropical" 747 and Malaysia "Hibiscus" 747 were very complex special liveries aswell.
I wonder when people will understand:
Embraer 190 or simply E190, not ERJ-190. E-Jets are NOT ERJs!
Boeing 747-8, not Boeing 747-800. Same goes for 787.
Airbus A320, not Airbus 320.
Airbii does not exist.

There was the aeroflot 767 back then with the crazy flower livery
Also the qantas bilaranji
Air Tahiti Nui
iirc the VS and BR liveries had extremely expensive paint

Here's an oldie but a goodie. This would be about as complicated as it gets and the process seems to be pretty well dialed in.

The Etihad A340-600 painted in F1 livery probably takes the price. It was indeed painted, in an untold number of shades, not decals. Heard whispers it was the most expensive paint job every applied to an aircraft.
Signature. You just read one.

If we're talking one-off liveries, Alaska's "Salmon Thirty Salmon" has got to be up there, too. As you can see in the video below, there were stencils involved, but also a lot of manual airbrushing to get the shading right.

Not really, those were mostly two tone liveries.

This discussion could be divided into (1) special/one-off liveries, and (2) complex standard liveries ....i.e. fleet-wide.

Someone once mentioned the China Airlines tail used to be handpainted. They'd even send someone to the factory to do it so that they could keep it up to spec...

I could imagine this was not the easiest to paint. Although at least it doesn't have any special metallic colours or such

It must be Hekla Aurora and Vatnajökull, both hand painted by artists:

You're right, the Chatham Union Flag tail is complicated, with many circles to give the shading.
Back when BA was using all the 'World Image' liveries the BA guy based with Boeing at Seattle told me that Boeing weren't happy about painting the more complicated tail designs. They were paint, not decals.
It was something like; a new build 747 or 757 was usually in paint for 2 or 3 days (feel free to correct me) but the more complicated, multi-coloured tails would need 3 or 4 days in paint. The extra day was going to slow the Boeing paint lines.
It was agreed that BA deliveries from Boeing would be in the more simple schemes like 'Delftblue Daybreak', 'Rendezvous' and 'Whale Rider'. The aircraft in the more colourful schemes were painted at LHR and elsewhere.

The yellow and green livery on Binter Mediterraneo CN-235s was complicated, with what seemed like hundreds of yellow circles on the fuselage.

The Qantas Dreamliner VH-ZND is a tricky one, I was watching a time lapse of it being painted only the other day, quite intricate.

Delta’s “flowing fabric” or “wavy gravy” was complicated: it required eight different colors (four shades of blue, two
shades of red, one white and a clear coat), whereas the current livery only uses four.

Loganair - lots and lots of stripes
China Airlines - The flower is supposedly handpainted
Air Antilles - Complex green pattern
