Airport Photos in the wake of coronavirus impacts

Wed Mar 18, 2020 2:31 pm

I wonder about the large fleet parking at the various home base airports. Apron versus taxiway parking, widebody versus narrowbody, legacy versus low-cost. Where are the Easyjets parked, where are the Ryanairs, those that do not have large home bases but are spread-out?

And why would Airliners.net have multiple airport overview photos of the current airliner parking by now? Isn't that desirable to observe?
And to take airliners to actual current events not just in the forum but also for the photo section.

MODS: can we change the title of this thread to "Coronavirus Airport Photos"? I don't think the OP is looking for pictures of AJO (Corona Municipal Airport).

For that you have to click on the OP's post triangle "report this post" and explain the reason.

I saw on this board that ATL was closing a runway for the sake of DL storage. I'd love to see a photo!

Yes, please click that triangle to create a report any time you need to reach us. "Mods" doesn't trigger a call to action, and we're only able to read a relatively small percentage of threads. The thread title has been changed accordingly for more clarity.

I'm not sure if you're asking why there aren't photos of the planes being parked (OP is very confusing in the wording). But if that's the case, it's probably because most of everybody is being told to stay inside their homes, and going out to take photos of planes contradicts that in many ways.

Most people (even photographers) have bigger fish to fry at the moment.
The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word.
There is no 787-800, nor 787-900 or 747-800. It's 787-8, 787-9, and 747-8.
A321neoLR is also unnecessary. It's simply A321LR.
Airplanes don't have isles, they have aisles.

Wouldn't be surprised if they start flying some to Marana or Victorville to park for next few weeks or months. Not enough space to handle all LHR.

I've gone out to take photographs at GLA in recent days. The idea is not to stop going out AFAIK ? The idea is not to come into close contact with people. Either way the airport is 5 minutes from my home and I've been snapping from remote spots, devoid of ANY human activity I can see.

Here is some of what's been happening:

Yesterday a Virgin Atlantic 744, G-VXLG arrived from LGW for storage. Joining 6 x British Airways A321ceo and 3x Flybe Q400's from the collapse.

Today another 4x British Airways A321ceo are expected to join the parade, as well as 5x Tui 737-800's and a Virgin Atlantic A330-300, today or next week. Fuel tanker lorries are also being parked up, as demand dwindles.

Hey, I'll refrain from comment on your journey as I'm not familiar with the current UK directives. In CH we're being dissuaded from even a solo spotting trip.

Great photos though - can I ask what body/glass you're using?

We're not on lock down here yet, although schools are closing after today's sessions. The advice is to avoid bars, clubs, restaurants etc, and maintain a 2m seperation from other people. Only stay home if displaying symptoms.

The camera used is a Lumix FZ-1000 with a fixed Leica zoom lens 25-400mm f2.8-4 capable of 800mm in zoom cropping 'intelligent zoom' mode, it also does 4K video. Very handy 'one bag' solution.

How serious is the grounding, especially in the regions with higher number of infections ? Can it be compared to what happened during/after the 9/11 attacks when there were aircraft parked everywhere at airports, even on taxiways ?

9/11 was a fairly instantaneous grounding with aircraft ordered to get down straight away. This is more gradual and planned but I can see airports becoming full up, taxiways and all.

9/11's effect is felt most profoundly in US and Canada. While there were flights cancelled worldwide due to drop in demand, intra-Europe and intra-Asia flights were operating more-or-less normally.

This time, it's global, and it's total. Most major airlines are parking over 90% of their fleets.

This is a video of parked CX, KA, UO and HX aircraft at HKG. Just CX alone is more than 100 A330, A350 and 777 widebodies.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXjnBQHvO3o

I wonder what DXB looks like, with possibly over 100 A380 parked there?

I think most people expect these aircraft to be in the skies with a least 75% pax loads again before May, HOWEVER some airlines will not survive April without government backing, and that's the worrying part.

I regretfully have to disagree with this optimism. Most airlines have already cancelled until end of April, and even if the Corona situation should start to recover, this will be a slow process. We will see a ramp up of capacity over many months, much longer than than it took to ground the fleets. And I am everything but confident that the situation will start to relax quickly.

We will see, but I hear that Asiana and Air China have already added capacity to LHR by the end of March. Seems like at that end of the world, thing s are returning to normal, so their own economy will thrive (their parked planes have seen their worst days). There will still be air travel from A to B but just on Asian carriers rather than European, for example, for the time being. When the virus cycle is complete by the end of May(excluding Africa and S.America), we will get two-way travel again.

I looked on FR24 this morning, saw several DL planes taxiing over to 28 from the terminal for parking (including newer ones, like 737-900ER N914DU). I also saw a few MD-88s headed over to Blytheville (N991DL). There were also some A330s (including N815NW) headed over to Pinal Airpark in Arizona.

"Most people" are not expecting that.

The Southern Hemisphere is admittedly coming into winter, which is going to exacerbate the situation, but this week the Australian PM has reiterated several times that we should assume this new normal will last for at least 6 months, possibly longer.
