Iberia Asia Expansion

Wed Mar 25, 2020 1:52 am

Hey folks!

I hope you are all staying safe in this pandemic!

Just out of curiosity, what are the chances of Iberia expanding in Asia? Without taking the COVID-19 into account, Iberia is expanding MAD-NRT to daily service using the A350 sometime this year.

With ICN-MAD seeing the largest number of O/D passenger between the pair as per Routes Online (https://www.routesonline.com/news/29/br ... kyo-links/), what is the likelihood of IB launching ICN? Also, are there any other cities in Asia that could potentially support a direct flight to MAD? IB already serves HKG (through CX codeshare). I had MNL in mind due to the strong historical and cultural links with a fairly large Filipino community in Spain but I guess this PH-Spain is already saturated with the ME3, CX and TK.

Any thoughts?

MNL-MAD is too far and too low yielding. BA struggles enough at ICN. AZ just left ICN-MXP. The market is Korea outbound and Koreans prefer to fly KE. PEK-MAD and PVG are primarily China point of sale and forget about them restarting in May they will probably not come back until awhile after Covid is over in Spain.

IB will have way bigger issues in 2020 like survival. No on there will be thinking about an Asian expansion.

They need to get some demand back on key routes more than anything as a priority.
Demand will be crushed until there is a vaccine any numbers are old and irrelevant to what IB would be able to get now. Watch Tokyo get cancelled or pulled to less than daily. No Olympics the cancellations will come flowing in. No new Asian routes in 2020 for IB , they are gonna be a in a real cash problem.

The IAG "Master Plan" has IB expanding their South American routes so BA can feed pax into the IB system to cover the South American route system. It would allow BA to expand its South American feed without using slots at LHR. There was also some expansion into the US to allow more feed into IB from Europe, again, rather than cannibalizing slots at LHR. However, with things the way they are going, my guess is nothing will happen until the entire COVID-19 situation is just a memory.

IB was always the BA/IB merger entity to give the Latin American connections to the group, while BA gave the rest of the world almost. Nothings changed from that, an odd route extra here and there, IB at PVG & IAD, BA at SCL & LIM, but the idea IB is going to expand greatly in Asia is fanciful. Not the market, not the strategy. A bigger question I would ask is what 'secondary' cities would IB expand to in LATAM, especially with the UX merger and LA leaving OW. Maybe the odd further inroad into major US for the reason mmo has given
