What is the longest Air France A318 route?

Thu Apr 02, 2020 4:57 am

Air France operates 18 of these aircraft in Europe and Africa. Do any of these fly to Asia?

They have 18 Business Class seats and 113 Economy seats for a total of 131. The first one was delivered in 2003 and is still in service.

Asia? You do realize that this is a short-haul jet, right? It doesn't even have proper business class seats, only economy seats with the middle seat blocked. At best you will find it in Turkey and the Middle East.

They should have installed real Business Class seats.

Technically the Middle East is part of Asia, no?

Technically the Middle East covers part of Europe (East Thrace) and Africa (Egypt). But Air France doesn't seems to use the A318 to any of those destinations anyway. The best chances would be to bet on a downgrade of the Amman and Tel Aviv routes, which are served by A320s. Judging from the lack of photos of Air France A318s in those places, I don't really think that happens.

Looking at the locations where the Air France A318s have been photographed, it's all relatively close to France. Seems to be a regular visitor in Zurich, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Milan. Also used on domestic routes to Marseilles and Toulouse. Occasionally it shows up on other airports as well, but nothing really far.

Seems like Air France didn't buy the A318 for it's range, they bought it for low capacity short haul flights.

And of course you can use Flight Radar 24 to pull up all the AF A318s, one tail at a time, and research where they fly. A bit of research to be sure, but the info is out there for ANYBODY to use to research questions just like this. I understand these questions stimulate conversation, but if all you want is the info, it is there for the taking.

The furthest from home I've ever seen one is ARN.

They're not good (read: really bad) long-haul birds as their CASM/CASK gap with their larger siblings grows even more on longer flights with fewer seats to spread the extra fuel cost around.

They did have that I believe, as part of a special subfleet to fly to low yielding africa flights which required a business class but didn't need full capacity. Mainly catered to oil destiantions. (Nevermind, it was the A319LR that did this, my bad, with it's "Dedicate' flights).

But "they should" is such a simple thing to say, barely any EU cariers have a propper C-class up front, why, it's not needed and euro-C gives airliners a much more flexible way of operating with changing C/Y demand. Ofcourse a big seat is nice, but economy whise it's absolutely not a "they should have".

This was in the beginning of the 2000s.

I think those A319LRs flew to SSG, PNR, KWI, TAS and maybe other destinations.

The configuraiton was 28 Business / 54 Economy.
Kind regards, Florens

Air France flies its A318 on all its European/Domestic network (some of them are bases art ORY).
They don’t have dédicated destinations though they are mostly used on short european routes to Italy, Germany, UK...
However, it is not rare to see them on longer flights such as CDG-ATH, CDG-LED or CDG-SVO as a substitute to a scheduled A319/320.

That is one of the (big) davantage to operate a single aircraft « familly » offering capacities from 130 to 210 seats.

When the planes fly CDG-SVO as a sub, do they provide hot meals to Business Class passengers? That flight is well over 2.5 hours. Do the A318s have a proper Business Class galley?

The furthest I have flown an A318 with Air France was Paris-Malaga when they flew this route on their own metal. The longest flight on a A318 I have done was Paris-Bucharest with TAROM. I have flown on the A318 close to 60 times, almost all of them with AF (others being Avianca and Tarom flights). I absolutely HATE the AF A318... it is the worst aircraft to fly on anywhere! Give my a Ryanair B738 any day! The AF A318 seats are the worst... they are like urban bus seats: miniscule hard armrests, thin non-reclining seats... Initially when AF rolled these seats out, they told their Frequent Flyers they were only for domestic flights... but now they are flying throughout Europe. I try to avoid them like the plague but they just seem to pop up everywhere!

I flew the AF A318 OSL-CDG-OSL many years ago, it was often used on OSL flights. Loved the A318, took off like a rocket.
Come, fly the prevailing winds with me

I flew on it from CDG to GVA. I’m sure this will be the one and only time in my life the boarding queue for Economy passengers was much shorter than the one for Business and other premium members.
