Craziest airfares seen during Covid

Fri Apr 10, 2020 12:19 am

I have been looking at airfares now and then during this pandemic, just to see how low they have fallen. Obviously not scientific and i know things vary by dates. so here goes, a couple I have seen are:

Den-TPA - 59 roundtrip in April - United
Den-syd - 324 roundtrip in Sept - air canada

I am sure there are even crazier out there.

I was in Hawaii two weeks ago trying to get back to the East Coast. Was worried my existing flight night get canceled and was researching other options. Found KOA-BOS via HNL on Hawaiian, with two day advance for $140 one way.

Frontier has been flying MCO-PWM for $15 one-way last week.

That’s really interesting - I presumed that because in most parts of the world you can only fly right now if you’re super important in the world of science/medicine that fares would be ridiculously high! Not the opposite... wonder what prices are like for the few remaining operational flights in Western Europe

Yeah, I tried to get out of Hawaii recently. It was difficult, because many flights were canceled, and prices are ridiculously high..

Mid May SAN-MDW for $39 one way. Jumped on that and moved it to mid July.

I think there was a window here in the U.S. in early March when coronavirus first hit and demand fell off a cliff, but it was too late for airlines to change their schedules, so they were just desperate for any cash they rake in, hence some bonkers fire sale prices. In the following weeks, airlines have been able to slash their schedules and not even operate 90+% of flights, so fares have returned to reasonable-ish levels. Being accused of price gouging or profiteering and the ensuing bad PR isn't worth a few hundred extra $$ to charge outrageously high prices.

Cheap relatively speaking but nothing like the $15-$50 seen above.

My parents have a lake house in Northern Minnesota and I try to make it there 1x monthly during summer season. Flying in Bemidji (only service is DL 2x per day to MSP) is a luxury that even locals don't do often due to sky high airfares. ($550-700 was typical last summer for ATL-MSP-BJI - I only flew to BJI once when the airfare dropped to a more reasonable $400). Anyhow snagged 3 weekend roundtrips (Fri-Sun) for Jun, Jul and Aug for $180/RT each.

I bought a ticket from MIA to SCL for $282 RT for November. It was $232 but i added on a bag for camping / hiking equipment.
As of Dec 2019 I've flown 457,440 miles on 270 flights on 54 airplane types with 60 airlines traveling thru 104 airports. I've visited 60 countries.

Interesting to see that prices in the US are way down. It seems that prices are going up in the rest of the world. It has been reported in national media here that tickets back to Europe from Australia at one point rose to over €5000 for the cheapest fares. Looking now they seem to have leveled off at around €2200, which is still a bit more than normal. I see there are a few Economy fares going for around €4200, which is 50% more than what you could normally get business class for.

I´ve seen very interesting fares from deep South America to MIA, in example, SCL-MIA roundtrip for less than U$D 200, or MVD-MIA for less than U$D 300. But you´re gambling on them...a friend o mine bought SCL-MIA for that fare and his flight was cancelled...so now he has to pay a higher fare to fly...or loose his money

EWR-TPA/MCO/RSW/FLL is showing up for $14 O/W right now for most of August and September on UA. A ton of other routes out of EWR are in the sub $40 range.

Just booked JFK-KEF-OSL RT for $998 in Icelandair Saga Class over the winter holiday (Dec 22-Jan 1; there are still a few more seats at that price!). There are also no change fees, which is a huge bonus in case COVID restrictions are still in place.
