Who owns these DC-10-40s ?

Sat Apr 11, 2020 10:14 am

I noticed the picture on the front page and was surprised to see these five, including a freighter, still around in 2020.

That picture was taken at Pinal Airpark, which is basically a boneyard. This is where aircraft go for retirement. Once they arrive here they're being scrapped from the register, meaning officially they don't exist anymore.

They're being cannibalized for parts and eventually they will be scrapped.

They're all ex-JAL birds - one is now owned by Omega Air, the rest by leasing companies.

An outfit in Kazakhstan called Deta Air operated a DC-10-40F relatively recently, you can find pics in the database. They previously had a sizeable fleet of Il-62s including the last one built, operating their own services, most notably Shymkent to Istanbul, and ACMI ops on behalf of other carriers including four ships that were based in Tehran for Aria Air (crash in MHD July 2009 brought that to an end). Interesting carrier.

While plenty of aircraft at MZJ will not grace the skies with their presence again, there are plenty of aircraft here that are here for short-term storage for various reasons too. Although these DC-10-40's I doubt will return to the skies again.

With the 737-MAX and COVID-19 issues, there are a lot of aircraft here that will be re-activated and airborne again once the crisis that caused the storage goes away. It has been a very busy week for MZJ to say the least, and they are going to be bursting at the seams soon (even with their 20-acre expansion).

Ahh Aria Air..... strange outfit...
I recall buying a ticket on Eram Air from Shiraz to Kish, and ending up on an Aria TU154...With lots of fluid coming from the wings... great flight.

Omega Air Tanker which recently purchased the militarized tankers used by The Netherlands also owns most if not all the planes in the picture. The three white passenger ex Vivaldi Airways/JAL birds were recently purchased according to sources online and to planespotters.

I would think that most people on this forum are familiar with this location as well as other similar locations and their purpose.

Is there any possibility that Omega would "swap out" for one of these desert DC-10-40s when their currently flying example runs out of hours?

I don't think so. Those parked aircraft are parked there for a reason, probably they've run out of hours too.

These are wrapped up still and look to be taken care of. Is there plans to fly them?

As nice as that may be, I think it is highly doubtful
