SQ or QR

Sat Apr 11, 2020 9:54 pm

I have to go to Cebu next year for a wedding.

Out of LAX there are multiple choices, however, the 2 that jumped out at me are SQ and QR.

With QR there is a 7 hour layover in Doha which makes for a longer trip, but it's a place I haven't been to so could do the tourist thing for a few hours. On SQ it's a 1 1/2 he layover, so maybe hit the lounge and freshen up.

So given the choice, which would you pick ?

No matter what airline you end up choosing I can only recommend waiting with booking until this corona crap is over and you’re able to plan at least a little bit. I know you’ll probably have a flexible ticket but it’s gonna save you from a lot of hassle.

And I’d choose QR in order to see Doha ;)

QR is offering their Q-Suites to LAX, so perfect for the honeymoon travel - only the shorter leg to Cebu is on a classic B787.

I would get in touch with QR for their fantastic "stop-over" offer and would stay in-between flights a little bit longer in Doha!

That is actually a great idea, I had been sitting here stewing on the fact that it was 33 hours of travel vs 23 hours on SQ, but heck, spending a day and a half in Doha would cross this off the bucket list.

While I haven't flown on QR I have nothing but great things to say about Singapore Airlines, they are a wonderful airline with some of the best service and great catering.

But...

Q-Suites are a bucket list item for most, so I would say go for Qatar and pray you don't get hit with an equipment swap.

Definitely SQ as they have the perfect hard and soft product. And - most important - consistency in their offering. The chance is pretty good that you are ending up in an older C on QR as they have so many equipment changes.

Does anyone know if all the 77L's have had the QSuite install yet ?

That would certainly make a difference.

Singapore Airlines any day for me. Nice seat, really good service and Singapore airport beats Doha. As an added bonus, the A350 or A380 (which ever they use to LAX these days) is much more comfortable than a 777.

I would choose SQ as QR is overrated and also DOH airport is a boring place.

Flying Business Class and having lounge access, a boring airport is the least problem I guess...

Both are very good airlines, I do enjoy a layover were i can go out, get a shower, and get fresh air. Since QR is giving you that option, then go with QR, plus you haven't been to Doha. Doha is like Dubai on a small scale, it a chill city, people are nice as well. Hopefully you get to Doha on time or earlier so you can utilize that 7 hr window, 1 hour max probably be spent in customs, plus another 20 mins to the hotel depending where you get a hotel, and also leaving 2 hours before departure time to go through security etc. I'd recommend the JW Marriott, W hotel, or the Sheraton.

QR does have a bit of equipment change, though on the US routes it mainly been Q suites, overall though QR service on board has always great, and no complaints from me.

Thank you all for your replies and input.

I ended up going with....ANA

Yeah I know, but I was able to grab 2 reward seats in first so honestly, for $500 and a bunch of miles we get to try ANA.
