TK refund. Opt for cash or miles ??

Wed Apr 22, 2020 3:40 pm

Hello there,

TK cancelled all my upcoming flights. When I called they offered me:
-Ticket costs refunded back to my credit card only when the flight bans are lifted + 60 days
or
-Mileage. If I'm not mistaken they offered around 90 miles for every dollar I spent on the tickets; to be deposited to my mileage account within 72 hours.

Anyone have to deal with similar situation?
Do the miles expire after 3 years?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Personally, cash in my pocket is best during these times.
Maybe you should consider how many miles your ticket would have earned if flown when considering the 90 miles X $1 spent proposal also. Is it a good deal or not.
Though I am not for giving airlines free money for service not delivered.

Cash. Would have said that even pre-virus.

Go for refund, the uncertainty of having miles and not able to spend (as the route might be discontinued or getting radically changed after COVID19) makes the decision very easy...

Initially a travel voucher or free rebooking were offered to me. A refund was never mentioned. Meanwhile the voucher is no longer an option and travel can now be changed until December with flights completed until the end of January.

Thanks everyone :)
Called again today, 3 options:
-Rebook until a year from now.
-A 125% voucher, to be booked a year from now.
-Miles, 1000 miles for every 10 euros of the ticket price.

Thanks again everyone.
I was wrong about the travel voucher, it is 15% higher than the original amount.
Here is the email I got from TK:

".......we would like to inform you that we could make you two suggestions on this matter. We can issue a traveler's cheque that is worth 15% higher than your EMD amount or credit 100 miles per 1 Euro at the value of your EMD into your Miles&Smiles membership account.

First of all, we would like to give you information on these offers we have made to you. If you prefer traveler's cheque, you can use your traveler's cheque we will issue specifically for you in;

The payments you will make to buy or change ticket, pay excess baggage fee, or buy emergency exit or extra legroom seat on Turkish Airlines flights,
The upgrade transactions for the flights you will make with Turkish Airlines.
We would like to inform you that you are entitled to use your traveler's check within 1 year starting from the issuance date.

If you would like to prefer crediting of miles into your Miles&Smiles membership account, we would like to inform you that the miles we will credit into your account will be valid for 3 years and you can use your miles in the ticket purchasing, upgrade transactions for your travels you will make within this period......."

Assuming based on your username you aren't U.S. based but if you keep in mind the DOT is forcing airlines (even foreign ones) that they must offer refunds to passengers if their flight is canceled.
I would say if you paid with credit card try to work with your bank to get a chargeback done and get your cash out in these times it's better to keep your cash in hand rather then tied up into a mileage program.
