A380 perfect for social distancing

Sat May 23, 2020 3:35 pm

International flights are supposed to resume in the next few months, yet we don't have a vaccine, nor even a decent treatment, against coronavirus. Social distancing is practiced everywhere, some airlines are already doing it, others are fighting against it.

The A380, with its unmatched floor area, should allow more distance between passengers.

If you can fill a larger proportion of seats compared to a more cramped plane, that should make it an attractive proposition, don't you think ?

Well except, it still needs special gates, and stronger/wider paved surfaces and is therefore limited to very specific airports, not to mention the expected load factors may very well not require such capacity even with seats planned open for 'social distancing'

Silly idea at a time when nobody is flying. Even 737/A320-size aircraft are operating mostly empty right now, so why would you want an expensive whale? Airlines around the world are collectively burning $ Billions each month. Are you going to open your wallet to provide subsidies to airlines which would operate the A380 to cover their excessively high cost of their operation? There is a reason why carriers are making the decision to temporarily ground or permanently retire their A380 fleets. It sucks cash at a time when cash is king. With revenues down ~90%, the preservation of cash (by lowering expenses) will make the difference between survival and liquidation for many carriers.

Its still a 'super' plane, such a heavyweight means also more fuel costs. With airlines scrambling for every penny nowadays to save them from extinction, i don't think they cant be bothered with a 500+ ton quad-engine airframe

No, I don't think so.

Let's not forget the A380 is extremely expensive to operate. It has an insanely high fuel burn and thus to operate this plane profitably you need high load factors. That means social distancing still cannot be enforced. To operate it with a lower load factor would only be loss-making. In that case it's better to operate a smaller plane with significantly lower operating costs.

Airlines have figured this out as well, nearly all A380s worldwide are grounded and will remain so for the foreseeable time. Lots of them are sent for an early retirement and Emirates, the only airline with A380s still on order, is looking for options to cancel a number of their remaining ordered aircraft.

Sure, when it comes to social distancing alone the A380 would allow you to haul the most passengers in one flight. The costs per passenger would go through the roof, if you are to divide the high operating costs of an A380 by the low number of passengers it hauls due to social distancing you end up with high ticket prices. That would put off even more passengers, making the ticket prices for the remaining passengers even higher. End of the line, the A380 is just far too big.

Smaller aircraft allow airlines to haul the same number of passengers at far lower costs, however social distancing cannot be enforced. But by making passengers wear mouth masks the spread of the virus can still be prevented. Many airlines and passengers see that as the preferred option as it keeps the costs down.

Not an economical way to move people around, is expensive to operate, and many airports can't accommodate it.

Everything you say is true. However, the basic problem is the operating costs. Most airlines have trouble making money with a full or reasonably full 380. Now you want to block seats probably a third at a minimum and there is no way it would make money. You might as well just throw cash out the window.
