Will Amazon Airlines ever use the 757?

Tue May 26, 2020 3:49 pm

This may be an extremely stupid question, but does anyone think Amazon Air will ever use the 757? I mean, the plane has really good engine, runway, and payload performance (Like a LOT of people STILL talk about that, though the plane was out of production since 2005.) Plus, it has commonality with the 767s they fly, and serve as the mid jet between the 738's and 763's. But, maybe not, because they could just upgauge or downgauge, leaving either empty space, or too much space. I don't know. Hope you guys can answer this. Thanks

They created a skin on Xplane.org even!

I think it would be so close to the 737-800 capacity they are buying right now that it would create excess cost from an ops perspective.

Plus if the capacity of the 737-800 is close to the 757, the fuel efficiency will certainly be the tie breaker, I would think.

That’s up to the ACMI carrier itself. I am sure Amazon would use the 757 if available for use as a cargo aircraft. Most of the good frames have been sucked up Fedex up to this point.

I think your title got my brain in motion. Does anyone think Amazon might consider trying passenger operations eventually? That would be something to see if it ever happens. Someone high up in Amazon has to have thrown the idea around.

No, Amazon Prime Air doesn't exist to make money, it is to control cost and control deliveries. Why would they want to get into the small margin PAX business? After 9/11 Microsoft had enough cash on hand to buy most every airline in the US, the fact that no capital venture or tech companies did that answers your question.

"Amazon Airlines" does not exist.

Yeah, there really is no point, only if Amazon needs to serve areas only accesible with 757 performance, which they probably won't. Thanks for the answer.

Haven't a lot of the "Prime Air" flights actually been contracted out re-badged to other cargo carriers (e.g. Atlas Airlines)?

Where would they even source a fleet of 757s from?

If they need something bigger than a 737-800, look out for one of the 3 A321P2F programs that are under development.

UA, AA, and DL will have lots of 757s to choose from

Clapped out old 757s with no life left aren't worth the conversion costs.

Some people's obsession to the 757 amazes me.

Facts. Pencil plane looks ugly. If you want the same family but better looking go the 76.

That's not a fact, that's an opinion, sure the 753 is to long, but the 752 is great looking aircraft.

Most of them do have life left. I don’t think Amazon is going to start buying up 757s but “clapped out” won’t be the reason why

Pretty sure Amazon owns (or leases) the majority of the aircraft though and then subleases them out to the carriers.

Sure, they may own the airplanes or own the leases, but there is no Amazon Prime Air, as an airline

You're absolutely right. Amazon does not have their own air carrier certificate. It is better to think of Amazon Air like United Express or Delta Connection. The carriers get the schedule from Amazon and operate it.
