A350 vs B787 ??

Thu May 28, 2020 6:03 pm

Hey all, just registered so I though id start this thread:

Which plane do u like the most ? Airbus 350, or Boeing 787 ??

I Absolutely love both planes, What I like about 787 is the flight yoke whereas airbus is a stick, if airbus had a yoke - it would be no brainer - id choose it, but flying passenger planes with a stick is just beyond me.

Anyway, which way do u prefer?

Both are great.

I love the way the A350 looks.

The 787's nice as well, but it's opened routes to more smaller markets, such as British Airways' London to CHS, MSY, PIT, PDX, SJC, AA's DFW-DUB/MUC/AKL, ORD-VCE/KRK/BUD/PRG/ATH, LAX-AKL/CHC, UA's SFO-PPT, and many more.

You can see my UN - A v B threads were rife when I signed up to a.net years ago, and I found them all a bit silly, especially during the development phase.

Now, having flown both aircraft (but not a lot - 1 sector 788, 4 sectors 789 and 1 sector 359), the 787 windows are the biggest distinguishing feature as a traveller. I like them sometimes (it means I'm still allowed to look out in some circumstances where traditional shades would have to be closed), but mostly hate them for being slow to change, and allowing lockdown.

I prefer the look of the A350, especislly the gorgeous curve of those winglets.

Oh dear

While I find the subject interesting it won’t be long before the usual whining about ‘A vs B’ discussion and how it shouldn’t be allowed

Ultimately it's a personal choice, but I don't get the obsession with yokes that fill your space in the cockpit. You barely use them. On a standard boring flight, I don't need to use the yoke more than 30 seconds. The rest of the time it's just in the way. I really haven't heard anything negative about sidesticks from any pilots who used them. Quite to the contrary, all pilots that I asked said that the A320 was super easy to land and hand fly.

As for 787 vs A350, based on my own experience from flying on them as a passenger: A350 hands down.

Airbus is way better at sound insulation than Boeing, which generally goes for most products and their direct competitors (777 vs A340, A380 vs 747, A320 vs 737). On a 13 hour flight this means a lot.

The interior fittings also tend to be of better quality on the Airbus, but definitely worse than in the past. The window push buttons on the 787 are just pathetic, they start cracking and falling apart in as little as a year.

But I should probably also mention that I find notable differences between the 787 variants. The 787-10 is a notably better aircraft than the -8 and almost as good as an A350 if you are seated in the right part of the plane. The -9 is the worst of the bunch, feels as noisy as a 777.

I haven't flown the -9 back to back with 773, only the -8, but this wasn't sense I had. 773 and -8 is really stark in favour of the -8 (although the ride when taxiiing is much smoother in the 773), and A359 straight onto 773 is travelling way back in time.
