Why the Boeing 777 is Famous

Fri May 29, 2020 11:39 pm

Why is the Boeing 777 so famous and how did that happen? I find it amazing they were able to make such a huge twin engine aircraft.

Who said it’s “famous”? I don’t know where you get such an idea.

Are the 747s, 737s, A380s, A320s, 767s, etc not famous as well?

I honestly have no clue where you are going with this post.
Whatever

I guess it’d be most famous because of MH370 and MH17, but that’s because people don’t really recognise most airliners. I’m sure anyone who flies knows that it’s very good at getting you where you need to go.

Going back to the 90s it certainly made an impact being so digital with its CAD design. It had a size and capability scope that was the biggest for 2 engines at the time. Excellent reliability. Over a thousand in operation. It’s an impressive plane. Not to say others aren’t but the A330 took a little longer to hit it’s stride and the A340 never really gained huge numbers and has seen numbers dwindle.

I don't disagree with any of those statements, but I don't see it as "famous" at all. It's just another plane we travel on.

For me, 767 was the first meaningful widebody twin, much more capable than the A300. The 777 has always seemed like something of an upscale (although I know that technically it isn't). The first 773 I saw into my home port (SQ into SYD) seemed amazingly long, but then came the A346.

Ask the general public about currently operational planes, and they'd know the Jumbo (maybe even calling it 747) and the A380. Perhaps the Dreamliner, and the'd know Boeing and Airbus.

Everything else are just small planes and big planes, or jets and props.

I think we need to define famous first before we can continue. What is famous? You mean most recognizable? Cause if you're talking about that i don't think many people -aside from us Aviation fans- can see the difference between a 777, A330 or an 787 and an A350. The most recognizable planes are the 747 and A380 in my opinion. The 747 for her iconic hump, and the A380 for her enormous size. But i remember asking my parents which aircraft they were flying home with and i got "A7350" as an answer. Turned out to be a 777 on the first leg and A350 on the second. They only knew that because they had to look it up from their reservation after me telling them an "A7350" doesn't really exist

If you're talking about its commercial succes, i think you can attribute that as being a great 747 replacement for many airlines. KLM replaced almost all of her 747's with 777's. Close to identical capacity, comparable range or even better, much lower fuel costs because of it having only 2 engines in stead of 4.

Especially the 777-300ER was a smash hit, because Boeing promised something but the aircraft they built exceeded those promises. As opposed to the MD11 that promised something but failed to deliver. That's why US Airlines dumped their MD11's very quickly after they got them.

As a replacement of the B747, it is indeed the most recognised "international" airplane. Even from a visual sense, you simply cant miss those monster engines hanging out from the 777 (especially the 300ER). The B737 is the most 'popular' Boeing plane as it is still probably the most used airplane (all variants). To that extent, something like a B767 is quite an unremarkable airplane out there, in terms of its size, shape and passenger recall. Even the B757 would eclipse it because of its pencil thin silhouette.
Similarly, the A320/A330 are also relatively unremarkable. You won't look at an A320 at a distance and really discern anything special visually atleast.

Famous? Where did you get that idea? It certainly isn't "famous" among the ordinary flying public, but probably infamous among frequent travellers for being so noisy. Among enthusiasts certainly, but any plane that sells over 2000 examples will be.

Or is the word you are looking for "popular"? Because that's an entirely different case. Or are you suggesting that we should build an observation tower on a 777 that is parked on an old cruise liner?

It's not. Though it is a popular widebody airliner.
