Opening of border USA/Australia speculation

Wed Jun 10, 2020 1:36 pm

In Australia the tourism restart taskforce set up by federal government, has suggested July 1 for opening of unrestricted flights New Zealand to Australia & September 10 for USA to Australia flights completely unrestricted & no quarantine at either end.

Some people seem to think it may happen bit earlier, some much later. Airlines, hotels & other travel suppliers need some certainty do they can plan.

Who thinks September 10 is realistic or ?

Your timeline is not accurate. It was merely a proposal by the taskforce and the September date on that proposal is for other countries in addition to New Zealand and Pacific Islands with cases under control. There is no way USA being the country with the most active and new cases will make that list. Australian borders will not open to USA until December if we are lucky.

Flights to New Zealand will not start in July as it currently stands.

What is your source re: September 10 opening? Everything I've read so far had me under the impression that international travel to/from OZ would be restricted until October in the best case scenario, with indications that 2021 is most likely. Would seem a bit premature for NZ/OZ to open their borders to the US when they're at polar ends of the spectrum in terms of covid response/cases.

USA won't happen for at least a year the way the US response to Covid-19 is failing so badly. Australia and NZ have paid the economic price once to control Covid-19. They aren't going to pay it twice.

I am hoping UK to Australia will open by Christmas, so that I may go to Australia for Christmas and all of January, but I think my chances are rather slim.
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

I'd have thought Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam; New Cal, Fiji, Vanuatu, French Polynesia et al - they're all far more likely to have no restrictions later in the year compared to North America or Europe.

Australia and NZ are aiming to drive the case number to 0, which NZ has already succeeded. It would be a surprise if they open to US traffic by Sep, unless anyone believe US will get to 0 by then.

They will open to each other, and by Sep, perhaps open to countries that have this largely under control, such as Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Korea and Singapore (note that although Singapore has hundreds of cases everyday, 99% of those are in the migrant dormitories which are isolated from the general population). Putting political issues aside, they may even open up to China (if they believe China's numbers)

Our pre-COVID plans to catch up with our US family are well and truly on hold.

Given that the US was the major infection vector for Australia, I'd expect that, although there will be business and political pressure, there will also be a lack of trust in the US's processes. I'd envisage a progressive reopening with the US, with quarantine remaining in place in the first instance. NSW has Australia's major international gateway in SYD, and the only new cases reported in the last 14 days (with 5-8,000 tests per day) have been returning travellers, all of whom (infectious or not) are taken to policed 14 day hotel quarantine.

I can't see a "free" reopening with the US (or the UK/Europe) until well into 2021. At this stage, NZ, and subsequently Australia will be seeking to protect their elimiation status.

As an American expat in Oz, I wish it was sooner than later. But I am prepared now to spend Christmas here rather than home with the family.

Opening between Europe and Australia would make sense, but there is a logistical problem in that there is only one flight that doesn't do a stop in a potentially off-limit Corona-plagued country.
