How long ago were those carriers 8x? I've never seen any DC-10 in other than 2x5x2, going back to 1982.

Wrong. Swissair resisted going to a three-class service and opted to maintain a more comfortable Economy section long after other airlines introduced Business Class.

Swissair’s DC-10s retained 8-abreast in Economy (2-4-2) until they were retrofitted with Business Class in 1984. The 747s retained 9-abreast in Economy until retrofitted with Business Class in 1984. Only the -357s went to 10-abreast. The -257s had left the fleet just prior to the introduction of Business Class and the move to 10-abreast in Economy.

I wrote 'I've never seen.' I didn't say 8x never existed. I was not flying Swissair DC-10s in the 80s.

In McDD diagrams from the early -70’s I’ve only seen the 2-4-2 config.

Not sure when the change to 2-5-2 happened but by the -80’s all I saw was 2-5-2 on DC-10’s in US, with one exception. World Airways DC-10’s were 3-4-3!

In the late -90’s I saw a 3-4-2 configuration on a Swissair MD-11 (same cabin width as DC-10).

I was on a AOM French Airlines DC10 30 with 10 abreast with a seat pitch that was cruel. I've yet to be as miserable as I was on the round trip LAX -> PPT -> LAX.

I also flew 10-across on the D10 with Belgian outfit SkyJet, However the pitch was not that terrible, so it didn't feel any worse than the L10 in 10-abreast, and certainly better than the 767 @ 8-abreast. Still preferable to a NB on long-haul. the high ceilings, big windows and airy cabin does make a difference to me.

Swissair cabins were positively S P A C I O U S up till the very end, with plush, thick, comfortable armchairs, and F class offered even on short haul. I remember even their Fokker 100 offered three classes of service. Fantastic stuff.

Here's a fairly decent selection of old seating charts:

I also flew on a Sun Country DC-10 that was brutal I believe it was 3-4-3. I remember how odd it was to see that configuration on a DC-10 because on my many previous DC-10 flights I never seen that tight a seating.

That was the configuration usually used by charter airlines, up to 380 seats in Y. Some scheduled airlines also used the 3-4-3 in Y, i.e. Garuda.

Many European charter airlines configured DC10's with upto 380 seats 3-4-3. Even Laker skytrain queezed in 345 passengers on their scheduled service across the pond.
I believe Finnair also had 3-4-3 on their MD11.

So were Omni's...if it wasn't for the fact I was returning home on one from a 6 month deployment to the Middle East, I would have been purely miserable for that 18 hours.

I am pretty certain at least the initial ones were delivered as 2-4-2... how long that lasted is another matter. They definitely finished as 2-5-2

Yes. My aunt was a UA F/A in the late 90s and she definitely worked down there.

Most of the DC-10-10s had it, except those delivered to CO, along with many DC-10-30s/-30CFs, i.e. Laker, National, Balair, ONA, TIA, WO, MP, Air Siam

It started with AA in 1978 with deregulation. It was matched almost immediately on all US airlines that flew the DC10 and L10. Here is a pic from 1976 of AA DC10 with 2x4x2

Comparable. 5.87m/19'3" for the 777 & 5.69m/18'8" for the DC10/MD11. The L1011 is also very similar at 5.77m/18'11".
