AA/AS Merger Potential - What would it look like?

Wed Jul 15, 2020 8:50 pm

It was annouced that AS will accelerate their joining of Oneworld to this year. There seems to be a few parallels of the CO/UA partnership that ended up in the two airlines merging.

Which now begs the question as to what could happen with AA and AS.

If a merger:

SEA as a hub?

Subsidiary consolidation? (Envoy and Horizon)

Fleet consolidation

Who would manage a hypothetical merger?

Real fascinating things to think about. What say you?

DOJ would have an issue with combined LAX assets. Overall thought little overlap and they would be a powerhouse. But ... AA is so debt heavy that AS would almost have to be the airlines that acquires AA. AS is far better off alone than joining AA who IMO lacks a cohesive strategy for anything. Doug Parker would just run both into the ground while artificially inflating the stock price.

Best of luck getting a merger approved that makes the largest airline in the world even larger.

What are the parallels you are seeing?

Well, for starters, Continental joined Star Alliance to work cooperatively with United, and a year later, they were merging. American and Alaska have been working together for some time now, and AS joining Oneworld to work closer with AA sounds familiar.

Continental was also a healthy airline at the time of the entry into Star, with United being less so. I would argue the same thing with Alaska and American.

Well, if it goes like the other AA-west coast adventures, you would see a slow decline in the number of routes being flown until therewasnothing really left on the west coast, until the next AA west coast debacle.

It'd look like a thread going nowhere on Airliners.net

……..typical
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

3-way AA-B6-AS merger should be the question.

It would just be another airline AA buys that they later dismantle out of incompetence.

See Air Cal, Reno Air, TWA.

more likely to see DL buy up AS. Would put an end to the weaker overall carrier at SEA
