An EK & US major agreement?

Mon Jul 20, 2020 7:55 am

With many of the industry leaders voicing interests in more JVs - it is not implausible to see an EK / Major code share.

UA with EWR, ORD & IAD - makes sense. EK had quite a close relationship with UA in the past. TK/LH would not be happy I’m sure.

AA & B6 could be interesting.

DAL’s Bastian would have to swallow some pride.

Overall it makes business sense and the old rule book is out the window with everyone bleeding. Long and thin is over until mid decade.

Emirates already has agreements with JetBlue and Alaska. Emirates actually flies to Fort Lauderdale instead of Miami because of JetBlue.

As said, JetBlue and Alaska Airlines are already feeding for Emirates in the USA. No need for any of the US3 to join in that task.

What would the US3 get out of it?

You're conflating JVs and codeshare agreements. Don't overlook the role of a limited grant of anti-trust immunity in JVs.

Domestic air travel will recover before international, so does US majors compared to EK. So if any airline management should swallow their pride, it is EK.

I think there should a limit on number of EK threads on a.net though. Every morning there a new thread with EK is great subliminal message.
All posts are just opinions.

Emirates is already looking into partnering with one of the US3

United seems like the candidate from my view and quoting the article "They have hubs at more US airports served by Emirates than Delta does, including in Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, and Washington Dulles"

I'd like to see them work on things with UA. That partnership was there when it was CO/EK, would like to see that again.

If UA/EK move to a JV or even a code share, that is another strike for ST and a pretty big win for *A. It feels like DL is really starting to see some pressure from both UA and AA.

The US3 had salty relationships with the Gulf3. But then, the lesson we should take from COVID is that we all have to work together to fight against the virus. And in the crosshairs, there could be a codeshare between one of them. I wouldn't be too sure though. Just continue to do what you do; stay aware and keep your eyes peeled.

This is a win DL really needs right now as Etihad is a distant #3. However if UA goes with UA, will be interesting to see if Turkish might move to ST that would balance things out more....

Always thought TK in SkyTeam and a DL partner as of late made more sense for all parties.

Agreed. There are only so many pieces on the chess board and DL needs a win of any type here. Lately DL seems to be on the outside with their nose pressed against the window. I anecdotally state, that as A OW Emerald, the ST network is just average at best.

If you look at it the other way around, EK partnering with DL will give EK access to additional US cities than it currently flies to, like DTW, the ATL megahub and maybe MSP. Not saying this is going to happen, but just thinking about it from a different perspective.
But even if it is DL or UA that EK partners with, the respective European partners are not going to be happy about it.

No US3 carrier wants to partner with EK. What are the US3 getting out of it? From NA, EK is really only useful for connecting to South Asia and both UA and DL already fly to India on their on their own metal and include it in their existing JV's.

UA just started flying to DEL on a limited schedule a few days ago. No idea when the DL and UA flights to BOM will restart.
