NYC 36 Hour Layover

Sun Sep 06, 2020 6:05 pm

In November, I will travel from LAX to JFK arriving at 06:00 AM and departing from JFK at 02:00 PM on the following day. I am not sure whether I will be subject to quarantine, how this is enforced, and I will be allowed to fly out after 36 hours.

What suggestions do you have? Should I re-book to an earlier flight or should I avoid JFK altogether?

Are you from California? The crazy quarantine rules have a crazy patchwork of enforcement. My state has police visits. Cali apparently has quarantines but no enforcement. My brother and family are going to Mexico and said they will ignore the quarantine as “stupid”. NY is probably the same.

New York has a quarantine requirement for travelers from a long list of states. According to this website, police or Dept. of Health employees meet flights and require a form filled out that will determine if you need to quarantine. Travelers passing through but not staying in NY do not have to quarantine including air travelers with layovers of less than 24 hours. Since your layover is a crazy 36 hours, you would be required to quarantine for 14 days. It is unclear what happens if you don't; maybe nothing, maybe you would not be allowed to board a flight the next day.

Of course your flight is not until November. By then these regulations may be more severe and more strongly enforced, or they may all be gone.

As for avoiding JFK, I would do everything possible to avoid cities and states that have lots of complicated regulations that change frequently and are randomly and haphazardly enforced. And the cities on either end of your flight occupy two of the top three spots on that list.

Switch your flight to EWR to avoid the quarantine.

It’s a suggestion not mandatory.
