Spanair question

Thu Sep 10, 2020 8:31 am

Hi! Reading a newspaper's 1995 index on issuu, I read the following headline: "Spanair lands in Puerto Rico"...

I apologize for not being able to provide with a link...

My question is: Did Spanair ever fly to SJU???

I want to know because I'd like to put that info at Wikipedia, both at Spanair's destinations and at Luis Munoz Marin's International Airport's article if this indeed happened.

Thanks and God bless you in advance!

Spanair had a pair of 767-300ERs from 1991/93 to 2002. I don't know if they flew to San Juan specifically, but it seems likely.

Hi AntonioMartin

Spanair didn't fly to San Juan, PR. They had domestic flights and flights around Europe as well charter flights from Northern Europe to Palma de Mallorca among others.

Take care

They used their pair of 767's to fly to GIG/GRU-EZE, HAV, IAD as scheduled services but also used to do charters to Caribbean destinations so San Juan was probably one of those charters.

Puerto Rico in the island of Gran Canaria does not have an airport. The only airport in the Island is LPA (Aeropuerto de Gran Canaria) so Spanair did not fly to Puerto Rico (spain), but it flew to LPA (I took that flight many times), it might have flown to PR (SJU)

One of my earliest aviation memories was riding a bus around the original ramp at MAD and being overtaken at close proximity by a Spanair B767-300ER.

They flew this type on a handful of scheduled flights and quite a large variety of charter destinations for one of the Spanish tour operators that co founded them. Viages Marsans IIRC.

Flew with them to MAD from IAD in July 2001, and then also MAD-BCN. They had a partnership with UA at the time for flights to and within Spain. Good service and nice airplanes.

Flew home MAD-IAD in late July 2001 and was on the right side of the aircraft. At that time, my camera was old-style film, and I had taken the last picture of the last roll while passing over Cape Cod. About 5-10 mins. later, we overflew NYC, and I looked down and saw Manhattan, and the twin towers of the WTC. From FL360, they still looked tall! Who knew...

Same as there is a village called San Juan in Spain. It's located just north of Alicante, in fact it's full name is San Juan de Alicante.

And while I'm pretty sure Spanair flew to Alicante, the airport is actually located south of the city. Therefor they never flew to San Juan de Alicante.

Interesting, because there is, in fact, a San Juan in Spain. It is located on the coast about halfway between Almeria and Cartagena. What you are referring to is Sant Joan, which is a community just to the north of Alicante. https://www.google.com/maps/place/San+J ... -1.6578197
