Celebrity Sightings on Flights

Sat Oct 17, 2020 10:47 am

I was checking out the celebrity sightings forum on Flyertalk and thought it would be pretty cool to start one here. Have you ever spotted anyone famous on one of your flights?

[quote="Flanker7"]Yes, sat one row away from our prime minister. Sat behind Ronald Koeman on my way to Manchester. Sat next to van der Sar and Alex Ferguson. But I just leave them to it.

Back in the 80's was on a short flight from DTW to MKE and it was me and the whole Milwaukee Buck's Basketball team. At that time Terry Cummings, Sidney Moncrief were probably the best known names and the coach was Don Nelson.

In 2005 VA from LHR to SFO, Richard Branson was on the flight and made it a point to stop and talk wit the passengers which was pretty cool.

I'm guessing I have - a few times other passengers have been excited and sneaking selfies / pics with another passenger.

But I don't really focus on celebrities, so every time I have had no idea who they were.

In 2006, I was upgraded and ended up sitting next to Southampton manager George Burley on a BA flight from Gatwick to Krakow.

He was very pleasant. Then I fell asleep. I snore like a bear. He wasn’t so pleasant when I woke up.

A long, long time ago (1988) I met Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt on an Aeroflot flight from Moscow to Heathrow.

One of the hottest Bollywood actresses from the 1990's Madhuri Dixit used to be a regular from BOM to Denver via LHR.

That woman can talk!

HRH Prince Joachim to Denmark. Sat beside him CDG-TLS and had a chat about race cars. Nice bloke.
HRH Prince Nassar bin Hamad al Khaliffa to Bahrain. His BBJ had thrown a wobbly so he tagged along for the ride with us and the horses in a ratty old 727. Very friendly, secured us (the flight crew) upgrades to suites at our hotel, VIP invitations to the race and limousine transfer to/from the track.
Tom Kristensen, 9 times Le Mans and 6 times Sebring winner. Sat beside him MUC-CDG and had a chat about racing and Audi. I don't like Audi and he's one of their ambassadors; made for an interesting conversation. The quintessential gentleman.
Jacques Villeneuve, F1 WDC. Sat beside him YUL-LHR and had a chat about, well, you've guessed it. Funny guy.
Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, former Danish PM. Sat beside him BRU-CPH but only exchanged pleasantries; never voted for him or his party.

Former NBA sixth man of the year Detlef Schrempf was on my SEA-AMS flight with NW back in 2005. I'd met him before at an autograph signing as a kid, but had a chance to chat with him briefly during boarding (I was a huge Seattle Supersonics fan and watched him play many times) and he couldn't have been a nicer guy.

Oh sheesh....dozens...I'll at least rattle of a few of the ones I can recall here off the top of my head...

JFK-LAX on AA in F earlier this year sat across the aisle from Heidi Klum
CLT-JFK on AA in F. Sat across from Priyanka Chopra. Absolute witch and one of the least pleasant people I've flown onboard with (not just celebrities)
LHR-JFK on BA in F. Sat across from Lionel Richie
SYD-LAX on QF in F. Sat in front of Liev Schreiber
ORD-LGA on AA. The New York City FC football team (including Andrea Pirlo, David Villa and Patrick Vieira, all sat in Y)
LHR-JFK on BA in F. John Cena, and former Barclays CEO Bob Diamond
JFK-LHR on BA in F. Princess Beatrice
DXB-LHR on BA in J (though I was in F). Sir Cliff Richard
LAX-JFK on AA in J last year. Mia Wasikowska in the row behind me

In terms of lounge spottings the numbers are even higher...Hugh Grant (in BA Concorde Room at LHR), Samuel L Jackson (same location and same time as British-centric personality Declan Donnelly), Queen Latifah (AA Flagship Lounge at LAX), Mike Tyson (AA Flagship Lounge at JFK), Lloyd Blankfein (then CEO of Goldman Sachs in the BA Arrivals Lounge at LHR), the list goes on...

Not exactly on flights but I once saw a local actress (Kris Aquino) in the departure terminal of the local airport, both of us on a flight to KLO IIRC. I was also once on the same plane as local singer Gary Valenciano on a flight from MNL to PPS, but I didn't see him in person and only found out later.

Probably not a celebrity per se - except for A. Netters, but in 2016 I remember seeing an airline CEO (still on duty) flying a competitor airline to a country served by his own airline...
I talked to him and he said that his choice was based on convenience !

Thank you to AirAFreak and others who made the effort to identify the celebrities they've seen by what makes them celebrities.
I've recognized a very low percentage of the names thrown out here.
Most real (non minor) celebrities don't fly commercial, especially for domestic travel.

Dennis Rodman (NBA) back in his SA Spurs days on a 3 a.m. red-eye, LAS-DFW on AA - he was slumming it in Coach in the back of the Mad Dog, we had received upgrades to F after being "bumped" off the 1am.

Martin Shugrue (former CEO of Eastern and Pan Am II) at SJU during Pan Am II's launch in Dec. '96. Discussed the A300 as the optimal aircraft for CASM based on their operation of JFK-MIA, JFK-SJU, MIA-SJU, in competition with AA at the time. Seemed very down-to-earth for an Executive, especially in those days.

I have seen more than a few... especially on the LAX-CDG vv route which for me is celebrity-siting central for some reason... Here is a list of celebs I have seen (that I remember):

Mick Jagger LAX-CDG, Air France F
Brad Pitt CDG - LAX, Air France F
Matt LeBlanc CDG-LAX, Air France J
Luc Besson (Director), LAX-CDG, Air France F
Jodie Foster, LAX-CDG, Air France F
Ridley Scott (Director), LAX-CDG, Air France F
Christophe Dechavannes (TV Personality) CDG-LAX, Air France F
Bernard Montiel (TV Personality), CDG-LAX, Air France J
Johnny Hallyday (French singer), LHR-CDG, Air France J
Joan Rivers, JFK-LAX, Delta F
James Rodriguez, (footballer), BCN-MAD, Iberia J
Gil Gilberto (Brazilian singer and former Culture Minister), GIG-CDG, Air France J
Jean-Paul Gaultier, LHR-CDG, Air France J
Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana of Thailand, BKK-CDG, Thai F ( a very surreal flight I must say...toilets blocked off just for her, flight attendants crawled on their hands and knees as they went by her seat, had to wait at CDG to disembark until she had well left the plane...)

LAX-IAH Cindy Crawford back in early 90's CO First she sat across the cabin, talked to nobody.

PHL-IAH Rihanna 2010ish UA First she sat next to me, very quiet, polite and beautiful.

PHL-IAH Dikembe Mutombo 2011ish UA First after his NBA playing days sat next to me in Row 1 in 2011. His knees hit the bulkhead and he was a very personable talkative guy handing out autographs to anyone who asked.

EWR-IAH my wife noticed LL Cool J in the UA Club. He was very approachable and gave her a pat on the back for saying hello to him.

RSW-IAH CO First mid 2000's noticed NASA Flight Director Gene Kranz, he looked just like the photos you see of him in Mission Control, very cool nice guy.

PHL-IAH CO First mid 2000's Cole Hamels pitcher for PHL Phillies got to sit in coach. Big guy alright.

IAH-EWR CO jump seat B752 probably 1996 Gordon Bethune then CO CEO came up front at the gate to say hello to the pilots. Very distinguished looking fella and happy go lucky it seemed.

Circa 2008 had David Beckham and family taking all of F in BA's 744 LHR-LAX, remember David, Vic, kids and babysitters being escorted through the gate hall by a ton of security.

Forgot a few politicians:
Sat next to the former president of Mexico Felipe Calderon on a flight from CDG to SCL, AF J (very nice and interesting conversation)
Also sat next to Jack Lang, former French Minister of Culture, on a flight from RAK to ORY, AT J (eager to start a conversation, but I wasn't very open to chit-chat!)
