Lufthansa, worst J class product and old gas guzzling A340's

Thu Oct 29, 2020 3:56 am

I'm researching products in this post-COVID world of my upcoming trip to Europe. British Airways has only twin jets now with 1-2-1 config on the new A350 and 787 and 2-2-2 on the older 777 which is being retrofited with 1-2-1 (from 2-2-2). Iberia has 1-2-1 across its entire fleet. Air France has the new 1-2-1 on the majority of their 777's and the new A350/787. KLM 777's have the older 2-2-2 but their new 787's have 1-2-1. I have to say the US3 have 1-2-1 on nearly its entire long haul fleet (DL, AA & Majority Polaris on UA). Lufthansa has the most gas guzzling fleet (still have old A340's) and surprisingly STIL HAS OLD 2-2-2 SEATS ON ITS A350's ONLY 2 YEARS OLD! As UA/LH are in a TATL alliance I'm now going for UA Polaris instead.

I thought the general consensus was that BA had the worst J class product due to the fact that you can't select seats for free unless you are a Oneworld Elite.

Not to mention the regular catering on offer. Bleh.

Have you considered SAS? They're 1-2-1 on their entire long haul fleet (A330-300, A340-300 and A350-900). They got standard business class seats on the A330 and A340 and lie-flat seats on the A350. This might be the most attractive option.

Beware of the British Airways 787-8 and 787-9, those are much worse than Lufthansa, using a dreadful 2-3-2 configuration. BA aside, Lufthansa definitely belongs in the second-worst position.

What do you mean standard on one and lie-flat on another? They have the same lie-flat seats on all aircraft, albeit a slightly modified version of the same on the A350.

That's how SeatGuru lists them, although I agree it's a bit confusing as the same kind of seats are described different in different places.

The LH group is also charging for better seats in J - like the "thrones" on LX. But I have to absolutely disagree with "worst J class product" - if we are talking about TATAL, the winner for sure (in a pre COVID19 world) is Ukraine International with their B737-900... And don't forget tap (Portugal) - even their A321LR is offering unrivalled comfort, despite being a narrowbody!

Stop flying in march but back then a Polaris seat was far from being a sure thing on TATL, same for AF/KL/DL. I intentionally booked AMS-DTW in february on the A359 flight and was subbed to 77L.

Believe it or not but the only sure 1-2-1's are IB and TP.

BTW, don't want to discourage you but here in western europe we are very far from being in a post-COVID world.

AC and WS both have 1-2-1 on their widebodies. Don't forget about the Canadian airlines.

SAS is entirely 1-2-1.
Virgin Atlantic is a mix of 1-2-1 and 1-1-1, while the 747s had 1-1 in the nose section.

Since we are talking transatlantic, Singapore Airlines has a few flights with 5th freedom rights between Europe and the US, and they are also exclusively 1-2-1 across their entire widebody fleet.

The A340-300s are not as gas guzzling as you may think, very small difference between them and the 777. Besides it’s sounds like LH is retiring the rest of the A340 fleet, we’ll know more on Thursday :(
