Did Northwest ever fly to Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta?

Fri Oct 30, 2020 10:59 pm

Its been ages since I was on NW TPAC but I remember in the 1990's they may have flown to Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta? If so why did the service start and end? I remember reading about it in the inflight magazine.

KUL for sure. It was less-than-daily from KIX, and didn't last very long. I think it might've been scrubbed in '00-'01?

A.net archives provide the answer.

KUL did not last long being launched in February 1999 and suspended in 2001 (pre 9/11) along with Kaohsiung, Taiwan

For Jakarta, NW planned to launch in 1998 with listed schedule 4x weekly DC-10 via Osaka, but it never launched

I think it could've lasted longer if it weren't for the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997. It hurt many routes and was also the reason DL took its PDX hub down
The 757-MAX is happening tomorrow.

perhaps that financial crisis is the answer, but ive always wondered how KIX lost its importance with NW/DL. This was a busy route (definetely operating into the 2000's) and successful for a long time, and now (for awhile now), no nonstop service. What gives here?
I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list!
