Re: Feeling nostalgic about 747s. Who’s have you flown?

Just one: A KL 74M, PH-BFI, named "City of Jakarta", from AMS to ORD on 30/9/2018. It was a tight connection at AMS since my E190 flight from OSL was severely delayed due to maintenance issues. While a lot of people on that flight missed their connections, luck was on my side. The $1,200 ticket was well worth it to fly on the queen at least once in my life before all the passenger versions are gone forever.

Here's my video of the takeoff and landing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qpuc9bl6t6w

I'm a young flyer coming from underprivilege and under-aspirating to travel... I've flown on a couple of Lufthansa's 747-400s. Among the ones that remain, hope to fly their 748 and perhaps whatever 748s remain in the world several years down the road if airlines don't decide to just get rid of them.

All 400s. Would be nice to get a ride on the -8i one day, but that really relies on KE sending them to AKL again.

Thanks ZK-NBT. Korean would be only option from Aus. China not on my list, been there done it.

I particularly remember Lufthansa because when I was a little kid I thought the 747 was a Lufthansa plane, as in like the livery is the name of the aircraft. :rotfl:

For mere mortals, it would probably be a toss-up between the upper-deck on a BA -400, seat 1A on a LH -400 or 1K on a SAA -300. But I'm a lucky SOB, so for me the best 747 ride ever was on a Kalitta -200F.

My first jet flight was on a KLM 747-200SUD, PH-BUM named "Anthony HG Fokker" when I was only a few months old. I know this because my parents just so happened to snap a picture of the plane at the gate with the name on the nose prominently displayed. Very lucky to have that picture.

My latest one was BA 747-400 G-CIVT, from LHR to IAD. Hopefully it won't be my last- I'm sure I'll get a chance to fly Lufthansa's 747s before they retire them.

IB Iberia (3 x)
SK SAS (2 x)
AR Aerolíneas Argentinas (2 x)

One of those IB flights was notable because it was a domestic flight, AGP-MAD, in 1984. Not the kind of flight you'd be likely to see on a large widebody aircraft these days, except perhaps in Japan.

Business class upstairs in a 747-100/200 was like a private jet... economy was OK too, but not so... private.
I forgot to add AR 747-200 to my list... the memory of that flight was so awful I blanked it out!

QF 747-238B (SYD > CHC; we boarded by stairs in SYD on a boiling summer's day), 747-338 (SYD to SIN, upstairs in Y. There were only 6 of us; the crew turned the trolley into a self-service bar!), 747-438 and 747-438ER
BA 747-436 (by a large margin, my most frequent - and, to date, my last 747 flight, on retro-liveried Landor G-BNLY)
SQ 747-412
CX 747-467
VS 747-4?? (don't know the code, it could have been a leased aircraft. It was a Gatters-based aircraft and it was terribly clapped out)

I have also flown on 747-4H6 ex-Malaysian, but they were with Qantas when I flew them. Does that count?

I do hope to fly on LH's 747-8i but their business class looks miserable. I did see a €1500 First return MUC to ORD this coming December, when LH had a sale during the hight of the pandemic. I wish I'd booked it now, that fare has long gone and it's €5,000-something now. Grrrrr. Opportunity missed.

I unfortunately haven't flown on one yet, was planning to last year before COVID hit, so that never happened. I have however been inside two 747's, N661US, a former Delta/Northwest 747-400 (prototype 744 along with being involved in Northwest flight 85) at the Delta Museum and N747NA, a former Pan Am/United 747SP that now operates for SOFIA/NASA.

My very first 747 flight was aboard Pan Am's N743PA, Clipper Derby, in 1971. She still had that "new plane" smell. Also flew aboard KLM's early -200 series, along with Sabena, TWA, and Air-India. My last was aboard British Airways G-AWNA, BOAC's very first. I never flew the -400. In my long lifetime, the 747 holds a very special place in my heart.

Re: Feeling nostalgic about 747s. Who’s have you flown?

I'm two away from the full set. I'll never get the SP and sadly can't see the -8 happening either. I drive past BOH daily and seeing the Qatar SP and 8i that were based there for a while was always great. They are now long gone unfortunately

British Airways (1990) - 200. LHR-SFO, SFO-LHR. I was nine and my only ever flight before this was on an MD83 so this seemed huge!
United - 100 (1991). JFK-LHR
Virgin Atlantic - 400 (1997) LHR-SFO, SFO-LHR
Cathay Pacific - 400 (1999) LHR-HKG, HKG-SYD, HKG-LHR
Qantas - 300 (1999). SYD-AKL
Malaysian Airlines- 400 (2008) LHR-KUL, KUL-LHR

The United 100 was a bonus. I was flying SFO-LHR via JFK. The first leg was on a DC10 which was cool. The second part was scheduled for a 767-200ER. That went tech so we had to wait 24 hours and then went home on the 747-100.

Can't believe it's been 13 years.......

Haven't been on this site in a long time. So I thought I'd add my 747 rides:

Just three times.

1994 QF LAX-SYD and return. 744. Got to ride in business class on the way down in the upper deck and visit the flight deck in flight. Coach on way back.

1996 TWA STL-JFK. 741. Trip originated out of MCI and the return departed out of LGA so no wide body :-(. Seating on the flight threw me as TWA used numbers not letters to designate seats on wide bodies. Also remember the white hybrid livery 747 TWA had at the time parked next to my flight. It was going to HNL. When we departed STL I was surprised how much runway we used. Then I later figured a reduced power setting had been used and also even later, the possibility of tankering fuel as the flight was going on to Rome and was lightly loaded for the segment I was on. Not sure about fuel prices in the 90s but I witnessed airlines do it out of PHX last decade as fuel was generally cheaper there.

I thought I had posted on here but perhaps that was on a similar thread some time ago. So...

Pan Am LHR to JFK in 1972. And through the eyes of a six year old I will never, ever forget the awe and astonishment of the size of the cabin when we boarded. Mom found a row in the middle all to herself where she was able to lie down and sleep.

Japan Airlines JFK to TYO (old Haneda) 1977 via Anchorage.
United :EWR to SFO 1980, where my mother and I debated whose hot lunch (in coach) was better
Northwest Orient 1983 JFK to NRT

Then in my grown up/working life:
British Airways
Cathay Pacific: where I fell in love with the upper deck
Singapore
ANA
Air France (once I was automatically upgraded to business at the gate which was wonderful because we then had a ground delay and the champagne just flowed and flowed)
Air India (Upper deck where our carry-ons wouldn't fit in the overhead bins and they told us to just leave them on the floor in an empty aisle--WTF??)
JAL again which was excellent
Northwest again which was alright
Korean Air, in the front row upstairs, which sadly may be my last ever 747 flight. Maybe someday I'll get to fly on LH's 748.
