747-100 on United, Continental and Northwest Orient
747-200 on PeoplExpress
747-400 on United, Northwest, ANA, JAL, British Airways
747-8i on Air China

I might be forgetting a couple. Some of these, especially the UA and NWO 741 flights and the ANA and JAL 744 flights, I did many times. I've flown a couple of interesting 747's, like one of the 400D's that ANA had converted for long range use. The 8i was also an interesting experience, though not all of that was because of the plane.

Unfortunately just one flight on a Lufthansa -400, D-ABVO, still glad I managed to do it though as it was the year before COVID.

Only by remembering back the times I was surprised to find out that I actually logged some B747 flights on OrientThai, Thai and Lufthansa...

But one flight was very special, standing out - Northwest B747, a repatriation flight after 9/11bringing me home to Europe. Free upgrade to Business Class in Upper Deck and a memorial prayer in the back galley by the crew! Very emotional!

I don't have a lot of 747 flights in my books, but the first one was somewhat of a rarity:

1978: DE* -200: SFO-FRA-SFO (fuel stop each way in MSP)
1982: LH -200: SFO-FRA-SFO
1983: UA -100: SFO-HNL (return on DC-10-10)
1984: LH -200: SFO-FRA-SFO
1993: LH -200: SFO-FRA (return on A340-200)

* Note in 1978, Condor's code was actually "DF"

All in all eight take-offs (and landings) with two airlines, Thai Airways and Cathay Pacific. Two memories stand out - boarding via stairs at Don Muang (on the ground next to the plane you suddenly realize the SIZE of the thing) and a flight HKG-MNL with so few passengers that a Fokker F70 would have been more than needed.

I boarded a few time at DMK (well when it was still BKK) by the stairs too. You are right, that's really when you realised how huge that machine is

Lufthansa 744 SIN-FRA-SIN.

I didn’t care what they say with statistics and all, there is something comforting about looking out over that big wing seeing 2 engines per side hanging off it.
Would’ve loved to have flown on the classic. Not to be.

I was lucky enough to fly on two BA 747-400s four years ago. At the time, I wasn’t into aviation, so I didn’t fully appreciate it. Now, I’m thankful for the experience.

AI - Type: 200, 300, 400 / Class: 1st, Business and Economy
BA - Type: 400 / Class: Economy
LH: 400 / Class: Economy

AI: All three classes I flew in were reasonable and good considering the era that I flew them in....
BA: The economy seat was excellent.
LH: The economy seats were dreadful....I connected to an LH 340-600 right after the 747 flight and the difference was significant.

First 747 flight was with BA on 1st of January 1988. LHR-ORD and sat on the upper deck which was coach seating.

Deplaning out of the right hand side of the plane by stairs is somewhat unique, I have done it a couple of times at SID while flying SAA.

I was 6 years old. 1971. My first trip to see my grandparents in Connecticut. My parents, two brothers and I flew LAX to JFK on an American Airlines 747.
My most recent flight was on a British Airways 747 LAX to Heathrow.

20+ years in the middle east, one technical stop for fuel in newfoundland in the 80s- I'd never seen so many flaps hang out of a wing!

Still my favorite old bird.

United and KLM, both -400's. United was LAX-SYD and back, in 1997, and KLM was JFK-AMS fairly recently.

The United flights were dire. Got a last minute upgrade to business on the KLM flight so it was rather nice.

My 747 experiences were better than my A380 experience, but I definitely prefer to fly on smaller airplanes.
