And one earlier example with BA in 1997, but haven’t been able to find out which.

Yay!! My favorite plane of all time!! I fell in love with the 747 as a child seeing a Pan Am 747 at LAX, and I couldn't make my mind believe what my eyes were telling me - that this giant airplane could get airborne. I fell even further in love with it in "Airport '75", with those magnificent air-to-air shots of N9675 (leased and barely-disguised-from American Airlines) making whatever schlock the filmmakers wanted to put on the screen almost irrelevant.

I have only flown three:

August, 1987: TWA flight #840, LAX-JFK. I'm almost positive it was a 747-100, as that was more common, but unfortunately, I didn't know to record my planes at the time. And since the only difference between the -100 and -200 models' interiors was the addition of one addition row (row 80 after row 28), I believe I would have remembered seeing row 80 so out of place on our way to row 34, so I'm confident that was the case.

Image

May, 2004: United flight #118, N199UA, a 747-422, LAX-ORD. Actually routed SAN-LAX-ORD, the agent at the commuter Terminal asked me, "why aren't you flying the non-stop?", to which I replied, "because domestic 747's are about to disappear entirely, and this might be my last chance!". She understood immediately, and gave me a knowing smile. "I love that plane, too!" I told one of the flight attendants about my love for the 747, and I got a tour of the plane during the trip and got to sit in the cockpit afterwards. Cooler than words!!

July, 2017: Lufthansa flight #457, D-ABYD, a 747-8(30), LAX-FRA. From the day in 1980 when I learned in my German language class in Bakersfield, California, that Lufthansa flew from LAX non-stop to Germany, I vowed that whatever my first trip to Europe turned out to be, it would begin at LAX, and it would be on a 747. And although circumstances didn't allow me to travel internationally for many years, when the opportunity came along, I held to my vow, and I made it happen. LAX-FRA was booked, in business class, on the 747-8, with the seats I wanted on the upper deck, 85 J & K.

Ironically enough, someone asked me if I was going to fly the A380 on this trip. I replied, "nahh, I vowed to fly on a 747 on my first trip. Besides, those A380's of Lufthansa aren't going anywhere anytime soon, so I'll get that on my next trip!"

Re: Feeling nostalgic about 747s. Who’s have you flown?

Sun Dec 06, 2020 5:19 pm

747-100: AA, BA, PA, UA
747-200: AI, BA, CP, FJ, GA, KU, NW, NZ, PA, QF, NZ/TG hybrid lease
747-300: AN, QF, SQ, UT
747-400: AN, BA, CA, FJ, KL, LH, MH, NW, NZ, QF, SQ, TG, UA
747SP: PA, QF, SA, UA

From what I remember, the AI -200 interiors were really out there- pink and purple walls- very different. KU interiors seemed very modern at the time with water tower and camel photographs in a sandy colour on the walls (a bit like EK interiors now). BA cabins were one of the worst before privatisation- after the mid 80's livery refresh they were spectacular. Finally, the NZ -200 interiors were just horrible- it looked old and early 70's (turn your watch back 10 years).

Lufthansa SFO-FRA and FRA-BLR and return.
Qantas LAX-SYD and back.

At the time, I was disappointed Qantas swapped the A380 to a 747 on my flights, as I was hoping to get my first A380 flight. Now I'm glad I got to fly on their 747s.

Maybe its my age as someone that grew up in the 777 Era that I don't have the same nostglia for the 744 as many others do. But I have flown on the following 744: UA, SQ, BR, CX. I think I have flown on KE's 744 too when I was really little. Funny how growing up I used to try and avoid the 744 and want to be on the A388 or the 77W for the better cabin product. Between around 2008 and 2014 I did not fly on a single 747 before flying on the747 again from 2014-2017 on UA and BR and I remember after flying the 77W so many times in between 2008 and 2014 that when I first flew on the 744 again the take-off felt different like it defitnley felt to not really be as powerful as the 77W or perhaps its the sheer size/weight of the 744.

I think for me it would be the 77W or A388 that I would look back on in being nostlgiac but that is probably cause most of my flights have been dominated by the 777

But, I really do hope to fly the 748 with LH one day.

For me my best memory of the 744 might have also been my last ever 747 flight with BR where I flew the upper-deck in economy class !

Unfortunately I haven't flown on one (yet), but I had the opportunity to tour a 5Y 747-400F as it prepared to depart. Saw its beauty from nose to tail, including the flight deck, upper deck, nose door, and full length of the main deck. On the outside, did a full walkaround and got to appreciate how huge it was from up close. I really hope to fly on one before they're all gone.

Only managed two round-trips on the Queen to date:

VS 744 LAS-MAN-LAS 2018 Premium Economy r/t - lower deck going, upper deck coming back

BA 744 LAS-LHR-LAS 2019 Biz Class upper deck (reverse facing seat) / Premium Economy lower on the return

I do miss the upper deck, like it's own little aircraft within an aircraft. I have not flown the Whale yet, I imagine the upper deck doesn't have the same feeling as it is much larger.

Prior to COVID was going to attempt to get on KL from LAX-AMS for one last ride on the -400. Will take LH specifically to be on a 748 once things return to something resembling normal and without concern of things being shut down or restricted from entering the Country.

First flight I remember was on a BOAC 747-100 although I’d traveled on an RAF Britannia at the age of 3 I’m told

Since then, many epic multi stop journeys on BA 747 Classics between London, Hong Kong and return in my youth, as non revs if we couldn’t get on BA we’d travel on Pan Am’s flt #1 or 2 with their 741’s

Later, after Cathay had their own 747’s I flew the same route on them several times, in those days they flew into Gatwick however

Left home in 1981 and travelled on a brand new PAA 747SP non stop from HKG to SFO

Later 747 flights as passenger in my working life were on BA again, Virgin, Continental and United

Not that many different carriers actually, but the 747 will always be my favorite aircraft, there’s just nothing like it

I had the chance to fly it as FO at Continental but was fed up with being on reserve and the prospect of more of the same so I bid the MD80

After the right seat in the superb B727 that was a major disappointment but that’s another story

Love the Queen of the skies

So far just, one: G-GIVV.

I've had pretty bad luck with 747s :(
August 2015: Visited the Museum of Flight at BFI; the 747-100 was offsite for maintenance and we couldn't see it.
October 2018: My first and only 747 (BA66 PHL-LHR), but the flight took off after dark and landed before sunrise so I could hardly see a thing out the window.
October 2018 return flight: canceled, rerouted through DUB on EI.
November 2019: Booked a BA IAD-CPH itinerary when the 747 was scheduled to operate BA216/217, but that route switched to an A380 at some point in the spring or summer.
June 2020: was booked on LH404 FRA-JFK, a 747-8, but a once-in-a-lifetime global pandemic you might've heard of canceled that trip.

I flew N121UA in the Star Alliance livery SFO-SYD in August 2013 and then flew it again with the globe ICN-SFO March 2017.

And I flew on an LH 748 JNB-FRA this past February. Fantastic ride!

Was on board an LH 748-i but it was one of the test aircraft at BFI and was parked, so I guess it doesn't count since the topic asks which ones you've flown

Only Qantas

747-338 (EBT)
747-438 (OJD)
747-438ER (OEE/OEG/OEI)

And all on a single city pair BNE-SYD. When I went to Japan last year in hindsight I should have flown QF via SYD, as they were still flying 747s on SYD-HND. But I went SQ via SIN

I've also visited the preserved QF 747-238B (EBQ) at LRE twice.
