When will Heathrow go back to using all 4 terminals?

Thu Dec 10, 2020 9:29 pm

Anyone know if when LHR will go back to using all four terminals? I'm booked to use Gulf Air from Terminal 2 in April (which I am quite happy about!) but interested to know anyway.

Thanks

I think the simple answer is when there is enough traffic to warrant it. As to when that will be, who knows?

They could end the slot waivers and see services resumed and new entrants immediately.

Well after covid 19 eventually demand will pick up again. The expansion is needed in the long run

I've just made a booking in one of the T4 hotels, for a trip in late 2021.
I did not realise T4 was shut.

Assuming the trip goes ahead, I'm flying from T5.
My plan was to catch the Heathrow Express from T5 to T4, rather than rely on a hotel shuttle bus.

Does anyone know if the Heathrow Express is operating to T4 at the moment?

I know it is a long way off, but I'm wondering if I should make alternative arrangements.

Probably when Covid is over and Britain recover from brexit. So... Anyone with a crystal ball here?

More seriously, at the latest on time for new flight to Alpha Centauri on Virgin-this-time-really-Galactic.

T4 to T5 is a relatively short and predictable journey with few, if any, bottlenecks. If you're already in a T4 hotel, I'd definitely take their shuttle.

T4 I don’t expect to open for a while. Holds about 50 flights daily. Priority would be T3. AA and QR seen very happy with the oneworld set up at T5. It’s cheaper for them, they can utilise BA facilities and it’s the best terminal at the airport which passengers will enjoy. Also oneworld has been pushing for consolidation in terminal operations as much as possible at its hubs. So I really don’t know.

Terminal 4 is completely closed. This includes the stations for TfL Rail and London Underground as they are accessed inside the terminal. Heathrow Express does not serve Terminal 4.

Incidentally, between T4 and T5 you'd need to change at Heathrow Central (both trains, TfL Rail T4-Centraland Heathrow Express Central-T5 are free within the airport complex). Another option is to take the bus, routes 482 and 490 still operate between T4 and T5, alas the free travel zone on these buses is also ending so you'd need to pay (no cash accepted). It will still be a third of the price of the Hotel Hoppa bus.

Great opportunity to deolish T4 nd rebuild into something more uplifting. The 80's grey look is dour.

I don't think the senior management team at Heathrow is in the mood to spend any money at all on building works because something looks a bit dated and dour. The interior of T4 had a major refurbishment less than 10 years ago. Spending right now is being cut to the absolute essentials

With the 2021 traffic predictions, not sure T3 will need to be re-opened.

If the hotel has a shuttle bus then best to use that.

The public buses from T4 area to T5, the 482 and 490, go via both parts of cargo first then to T5. If you are east of T4 to start with then they stop at T4 before cargo as well, meaning it can up to 15 minutes or more, and sometimes be packed depending on the shift times of the cargo workforce. Not fun when you have luggage.

The airport are also stopping the subsidy for all the buses around the airport perimeter from January meaning they are no longer free. And as London buses do not take cash you will need an Oyster card or pay by credit/debit card.

What's your business case in the current climate? Besides a lot was spent revamping when BA moved out, T4 is decent IMHO.

I didn't realise the link between T4 and Central (T2 and T3) wasn't a Heathrow Express train.
I knew that when you take the train from T4 to Central, you have to change to another line to get to either T5 or Paddington.
But I'd always assumed the train between T4 and Central was a Heathrow Express train.
I've used it before and it appeared to be the same. Although it was a few years ago, so maybe it's my memory.

The hotel I have booked doesn't have a shuttle. It is within walking distance of Terminal 4, so it doesn't really need to provide one.
At the moment it is closed until the end of February. But now that Heathrow has decided to keep T4 shut till the end of 2021, I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to keep the hotel closed for longer.

So I'm going to make alternative arrangements.

Thanks for all the tips everyone.

Regarding T5 and AA and QR both now operating from there, with AA in particular operating a much reduced schedule since the pandemic began, will it operationally be feasible for AA to operate from T5 permanently once the schedules ramp back up to what they would normally be, whenever that is (4 x daily to JFK, 3 x daily to ORD, 3 x daily to DFW, 1 x daily to CLT, 1 x daily to PHL, 1 x daily to LAX, 1 x daily to MIA, 1 x daily to RDU, + PHX, SEA, and BOS). Is there enough room / capacity at T5 for all that and will AA eventually open a Flagship or Admiral's Club at T5? They had a pretty large, though a bit dated Admiral's Club in T3.

Time will tell, but if we are assuming that capacity will eventually return to 2019 levels then AA (etc) can only remain in T5 if even more BA flights move to T3. T5 is too small to accommodate BA’s operation (pre-COVID) without adding partner carriers as well. Whether that is a trade-of BA is prepared to make will become apparent in the future.

Two hundred years to complete a voyage of four light years means only one fiftieth of the speed of light, that is 6000 km per second. I doubt that there would be a significant time distortion at that speed. Does anyone know?
