Eclipse aircraft

Sun Dec 20, 2020 1:42 pm

Why has Eclipse aircraft been discontinued? And why has the company produced so few aircraft? But the cost of such a board is quite high.

Just a little reading on it.

From what I've seen and read the engineering team was not that impressive.

That's not entirely true, they had some 2'500 orders. I suppose that the demise of their main customer DayJet (which apparently had 1'400 copies on order or LOI for themselves) killed the whole program in the 2008 economic downturn.

They built 260 total, not “nobody” but not a viable business plan, I know guys from their sales/demo team. It wasn’t thoroughly sorted out and had many design problems.

Indeed, I'm still puzzled how they managed to screw up their business with such a backlog, every other OEM in the same market segment only can dream about. I assume that most of these "orders" were actually kinda bogus and potential investors became aware of it?

Vern Raeburn was way off in his understanding of aviation, thought he could revolutionize aviation with his high tech experience. Aviation wasn’t impressed, Vern lost everything including his wife. The Day Jet team thought the same. Nothing new in aviation—it’s a great way to lose a fortune and a reputation.

Too many people think ground-based experience (cars, high tech, etc) translate directly into aviation and the aviation industry is just too hidebound and stupid to change. Any modern jet has far more in common with a spacecraft than it does with a Mercedes car
