There was only one airline called the red tails...
Boeing is re-engining the 707 tonight, with Shinkai as the CEO and FLAIRPORT as the CFO. He has the 757 tooling in giant snowglobe that tracks flights.

For me: UTA,
Ansett
Australian (the Cairns based QF low cost off shoot loved their 763's in that beautiful livery shut down to create Jetstar bogan airlines)
BCAL loved that rampant Lion livery
Pan Am (great airline to fly)
One from left of filed JAT their DC-10s they use to fly into Melbourne.
TAA
SkyWest flying their F-100s into Melbourne.
I could go on and on, what a great thread.

I suppose from an aviation enthusiast, all the Eastern Block countries and their Soviet built fleets. I guess living in Melbourne we miss all the European airlines that use to fly into Melbourne.

1) Britannia (Favourite livery ever and from an era where charter airlines did service! TUI just isn't the same)
2) Dan Air (All those fleet types!)
3) British Midland (Before that BMI nonsense)
4) LTU International (MD11s and Tristars!)
5) Sabena (Many happy memories flying them to BRU as a kid!)

Let's see.

1. Martinair
2. WOW Air
3. Air Berlin
4. Malev
5. Spanair

I'm afraid it won't take long before the list will be shaken up, a good number of airlines aren't doing too good. They will be missed once they're gone.

I'm surprised there haven't been more Air Afrique votes! Iconic color scheme, and a cool symbol of West African decolonization and independence. They had a hugely varied fleet, from heavy piston types to widebodies, and had a very strong safety record (the only fatal crash they ever had was a DC-6 that went down after takeoff from Douala in the early-1960s). They also lasted for forty years in a challenging operating environment, which is far longer than most of the U.S. airlines that people listed.

That one is actually still around. Granted, it's a whole other airline now than it was back then. But to those who grew up after all the airlines you mentioned had gone, Frontier is likely to be the only name that means something to them.

Lately I heard a conversation between an old retired pilot and a teenager. The pilot said he used to fly for Allegheny, the teenager didn't know what he meant. Allegheny? Never heard of! Did you by any chance mean Allegiant? That's the one airline they know that sounds similar. The pilot couldn't understand someone had never heard of Allegheny, but for this teenager they had just never been around. He grew up without Allegheny, hence for him Allegheny wasn't part of the landscape of airlines. But Allegiant was.

Western....the only way to fly!
Air Berlin...flew them from LAX only once, but was impressed.
Pan Am...of course.
PSA...and the nostalgia that went a long with seeing their "smiles" on the tarmac.
TWA...of course.

Honorable mention....the old American too. I agree. I know all three legacies (AA, Delta and UA) don't do all that great when it comes to airline ratings, but AA seems to be bringing up the rear of the 3. Kind of sad since it's the only one of the three that says "American" on its fuselage and has either donned the eagle (of old) and the flag (of the new). I hope they can get their act together as the "new" American and make a stronger push. The USA needs to be represented by this legacy carrier at the world's airports, in my opinion. So there is my patriotic commentary for the day. ;)

The Air Berlin before 2010, when they were a good airline with great service and a nice product. What became of Air Berlin afterwards was a disgrace, I didn't feel bad when they went bankrupt.

I also really liked Jet Airways, so much better than Air India in every aspect.

Eurowings was quite nice, too, before they were converted into a low cost carrier.

I miss Malév, once they went under the "low cost" airlines jacked all the prices up at BUD.
L101, 733/4/5/8/9, 741/2/3 (never managed 744!), MD 80/2/3/8/90, MD11, DHC8/3/Q4, E170, E195, 757, 77W, 763/4, Travel Air 2000. A300/310, A319/320/321, A333, ATR-72, probably a few others I forget. Passenger, not pilot, alas! BUD based.

I miss these because they provided me with some of my flying firsts:

British Caledonian - first flight and first intercontinental flight
Varig - first transatlantic flight
Ansett - first domestic flight in an overseas country
Dan Air - first turboprop and first four engined jet [BAE146].

2. TWA - my first widebody (L1011) and always liked flying through STL
3. AirTran - loved their 717's and their employees were always so friendly. Still try fly the 717's when flying Delta nowadays
4. AA before America West management took over - flawed but so much better than they are now.
5. Nevis Express - ok, only flew them once on 7 minute flight from SKB to Nevis, but certainly enjoyed the 7 minutes

2. The Ansett group, including Air NSW etc
3. Hazelton, personal connection there...
4. Jes Air, for being one of my rarest ever spottings, their A310 @ Melbourne
5. British Midland / BMI, every flight with them was superb!

AA - Bob Crandall era
WN - lounge seating, 2/3 full, and 25 minute turns on the 733 - pre-2000 (Herb's airline)
NC - flew all over Michigan with Herman the Duck, good, solid, airline
Bonanza - LAS hometown airline, had I been born in another era, would've been my go-to airline
RW - see Bonanza above, Top Banana in the West, the bright yellow DC-9s
RC - RW and NC were good lines, had a lot of flights out of DTW in the 80s - until one Steve Wolf came along for a quick payday

Honorable mention to National Airlines (N7) - nice, clean 757s out of LAS - flew them a couple of times, nothing bad, flights were on-time and cheap
