Footage of old turbojet Aircraft taking off?

Tue Feb 16, 2021 5:22 am

Are there any authentic takeoffs of 707s an DC-8s with the JT3c and JT4a engines? Im curious to see what they mustve sounded like in real life.

This is a good one of the Convair 990. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any videos of 707/DC-8 with turbojets. They switched to turbofans pretty quickly.

Unbelievable footage! Didn’t realise these birds were still heavy smokers right to the end. Btw the CV-990A was actually turbofan powered, albeit in a weird set up with the big fan at the aft of the engine, worth a Google if you’re not already familiar. It’s the GE CJ-805-23 engine you’re looking for (CJ-805-3 is the turbojet version, as fitted to the CV-880 and CV-880M).

If I remember correctly Spantax made their 990s less smokey, but I do not know how.

There are just a few videos from turbojets. Which is a sad thing.

There are sound videos from KC-135's though. And not TF-33 ones.

Oh, bless them. People are people. They would swear they saw spinning propellers on a 737MAX!
Where I live the local airport (due to Covid) has its traffic down approx 95%, yet people still call the local police to complain about noisy late evening take offs when in fact there are none.
Last case to make the headlines was an environmental group making a stink about the 'noisy boom' of late evening take offs, when in fact it turned out what they were hearing where high speed trains transiting at circa 150mph on the nearby line - precisely the transport modality they are always advocating for!!!!!
Some people have no idea how noisy high speed trains can be, to the extend of mistaking them for a departing jet aircraft.
Food for thought.

There some Comet 4 footage here, though I don't think all the sound is of Comet 4s... the really high pitched ones tend to be the sound of a Comet.

https://youtu.be/p6XA2muWAwI

There's also this ex-TWA Convair 880 taking off from Mohave in 1991. It starts its roll about 5 minutes 45 into the video.

https://youtu.be/isP1LVVZ6nU

Pretty cool :)

While you're at it - If someone can find Air Vietnam 707 footage (preferably in color) of it taxiing or taking off it would be greatly appreciated. The only footage of it at all is from a Starboard76 video I believe.

The noise nimbys will complain as long as they can see an airplane ( even if it is a small black spec in the distance. )

That Comet video is very cool. Thanks. The flap angle during landing was outrageous. Looks to be at least 50 degrees.

Agreed those flaps were incredible. They must have been very strong to withstand the airflow hitting them.

The sounds are added, unfortunately. Not the sounds of the actual landing planes.

Cedarjet....
Do you remember the Saha 707’s being incredibly quiet from the inside...?
Recall beginning to taxi, and there was virtually no noise inside the cabin...
Very bizarre.!!

To be honest there weren't much document and record about AVN operation, and not more than 10 pictures about the mentioned 707. Finding a B787 operated by HVN (nowadays Vietnam Airlines) is much easier than an AVN B707.

As a Vietnamese, I have made effort to find more stuffs related to AVN, but not much. I guess one of the reason for the lack of footages and documentaries is that the current S.R. Vietnam government keeps censoring sensitive pieces of info. One more reason is that there were actually not so much recording about this VN-absorbed carrier.

Wow, that is an interesting video. As it was taken at Bhisho airport, I was expecting it to be a Ciskei International Airways Convair. However, as the video appears to be from 1986 and Ciskei International was only founded in 1987 (and none of its Convairs ever made it to Bhisho), this must have been a visit by a Ports of Call Denver CV990 (but did they still operate them by 1986 - and what the heckwere they doing at Bhisho?)

I figured that was the case. The real Comet sounds like this - a Comet 4C that still taxis on its own power.

That video is from 2018 and has proper Comet sound.

There are quite a few databases but very little information overall. I've yet to find an image of XV-NJD on port side.

Of course there were a myriad of reasons why the early Boeing products were built the they way they were and I highly doubt that when the 737 was initially designed they thought there would be 10 different versions of it and still being built 50 plus years later.

Try putting two CFM-LEAP engines into the wing root though!

Reminds me of when my paternal grand-parents lived under the approach to YUL 24L… I remember one afternoon in the late '70s, with quite a few 4-engined (noisy) approaches…

Fantastic thread! These great classic YouTube videos always remind me of an old Air Rhodesia captain, who said that the "Turbojets were great machines for converting fuel into smoke and noise, the by product of which is thrust!"
I wish there was still a flying boat service on the African Lakes!

CV 990 was my very first jet flight, Summer of '64. Army PCS from NY-ORD on American. Was pretty cool at the time. From the footage I guess I was flying the "fumy skies", though.

PResumably you mean turbojet and not low-bypass turbofans like the MD80s.

I think of Kai Tak and wonder how people could tolerate having jets fly by so frequently and so low and noisy... like it's cool as an aviator, but didn't it get tiring living under it constantly?

Those are JT3D's and turbofans.

It is sad there are really so few big turbojet sounds to be found.
