Aircraft you've been aboard but not flown in

Mon Mar 01, 2021 5:58 pm

Inspired by the Airports you visited but not flown to thread, what aircraft have you been aboard on the ground but haven't flown on?

I'll start:

Boeing 747-400F
C-17 Globemaster III
Cessna 162 Skycatcher
Concorde
Sikorsky S-76
Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star

Think all I got is the C-5, unless I can somehow do the required gymnastics to could the cabin demonstrator for the MRJ, or the 727 procedures sim ;)

I enjoy poking around hangers and aviation museums, so it could be a long list. That said, there are a lot of types that I've visited in museums and have then still managed to fly on later (Il-18, Il-62, Il-76, Il-86, DC-3 etc...)

A321-200 NEO (London Gatwick)
An-124 (Kiev Gostomel)
BAe Hawk (various airshows)
B707-300 (Reagan Library, CA, USA)
BBD CS-100 (Farnborough Airshow)
CH-47 (various airshows)
Concorde (Sinsheim Museum)
DC-4 (Coventry)
EMB E-2 (Farnborough Airshow)
GAF Nomad (Air Safaris, NZ)
Il-14 (Pyongyang Airport, before it was moved to the underground museum)
L-188 Electra (Buffalo Airways Hangar)
L. Constellation (TWA Hotel, JFK)
RUAG Do-228 NG (Farnborough Airshow)
Shorts Sunderland (Chatham Islands, NZ)
Tu-144 (Sinsheim Museum)
Viking DHC-6-400 (Farnborough Airshow)
Westland Puma (various airshows)

I'm positive there are dozens, if not hundreds more. I haven't even thought about historic warbirds, or different variants of Antonovs that I've climbed through.

Concorde (USS Intrepid museum)
A380 (QF Sydney maintenance base)
Lockheed Constellation (HARS Museum, WOL airport)

Probably a couple of others at various GA airports and arishows. And anything open to enter at any aviation or technical museum

A C-130 and Concorde both come to mind. I think I got to sit in the cockpit of some fighter at an air museum as a kid, but I forget what it was. Maybe an old F-4?

They pretty much all would have been static displays at airshows and museums. As best as I can remember:

Military (historical)
B-25
C-47 (DC-3)
C-54 (DC-4)
B-29 -- "Fifi"

Military (in service)
C-5
C-130
Maybe a C-17 (Vague memory of an airshow I attended as a kid around 30 years ago)
KC-135
KC-10

Civilian:
A310F
B727-200F
B757-200F
B767F (don't recall if it was a 200 or 300)

I've got five specific ones:

Lockheed JetStar:

Image

Convair 880:

Image

Both of those were at Graceland. Well worth a trip and not just for the planes.

Lockheed L1049 Constellation:

Image

One of the many planes that served as Air Force One in the early jet age:

And perhaps most sadly, the Concorde:

My faves were the Denver Ports of Call Convair 990s during their monthly open houses in the early 80s. Also been aboard their L-188, 727-100, 707-100Bs and 707-300B/Cs but I've flown on those types with other airlines (except the 707-300B.)

For work:
UA (CO) 762 to drop off a UM during my first job
TK 77W
TK A340
LH A380

For leisure
Cessna 172
Embraer Phenom

Plus quite a few at air shows and museums. The earliest of which I can remember when I was about 3 or 4 I was put in the captains seat of a KC135 at the former Millington NAS and I was playing with switches on the yoke when the pilot set off the stick shaker test. He told me that I fired the guns and blew up the beer stand lol.

In terms of types, I worked at NZ for a while a long time ago and got to go onboard aircraft on a daily basis, some types I’ve been onboard but never down OTOH

A342 AR
A313 SB
74L SS, Corsair 747SP filling in for TN
762 NZ
M11 CI

Was onboard plenty of carriers I’ve never flown, or types I’ve flown with other carriers.

Not including museum pieces but only planes I've had the opportunity to visit but didn't fly I could name BA's L1011, Aeroflot's IL86 and Austral's BAC 1-11.

As far as my brain has kept track off:

At Museums
- Concorde (2x actually: Sinsheim & Yeovilton)
- Tu-144
- Vickers Viscount
- Avro RJX100
- Canadair Challenger
- VC-990 Coronado

At Airshows/fairs
- CH-53G
- AW-169
- Aérospatiale AS 332 Super Puma
- Aérospatiale SA 319 Alouette III
- Bell UH-1
- AH-64 Apache
- UH-60 Black Hawk (lots of choppers here...)
- C-160 Transall
- Cessna Citation (no idea which subtype - a T-tailed)
- Dassault Mirage IIIS

Other occasions
- Mooney unknown type
- Piper PA-28 Archer
- Piper PA-18 / L-4
- 747-200 (really recommendable: Arlanda Airport JumboStay, flew on -100 ans -400, but not the -200)
- Breguet Atlantique (the cut up one in the Geneva Airport building - does that bird still exist?)
- Northrop F-5E Tiger II
- Hawker Hunter (in 1993, still operational with Swiss Air Force back then)

Okay, I have to weigh in on this one just because I do think I have one or two interesting ones.
Boeing 727-100 and 200 (I stuck my head into the gear wells of both as they sat next to each other. That counts as being 'in it' right?)
P-8 Poseidon (Well about as much as the Navy will let you in it to look at the cockpit and not much else.)
KC-10 and DC-10 (Both were at separate Long Beach Festivals of Flight)

Scottish Twin Pioneer - Melaka Historical Vehicle Park, Malaysia

The Antonov 225 when it first visited EWR, very interesting, huge but like all Russian aircraft I’ve seen all aspects of the aircraft were very crude, not even close to Western standards of workmanship

I remember speaking to the Captain briefly, he was walking around outside wearing a full length leather coat, cool and weird at the same time

One more thing, a couple of days later we were landing on 22R back in EWR after a redeye from the west coast, usually we’d land on 22L but there was no traffic at 0500 or whatever it was and the right runway makes for a shorter taxi to the gate

The ILS was inop on 22R but we had great visibility so we’re flying visually using the VASI’s for vertical guidance, the closer we got to the runway however they kept showing red indicating we were too low

We finally realized they were not giving us correct information, we made a normal landing then asked ATC if they knew of any issues with the VASI

At the time they said no but a couple of days later they contacted the company to tell them that indeed the VASI lights had been angled completely wrong and that they had been literally blown over by the jet blast from the AN 225 when it had departed from that runway

Probably not a potential issue with any other aircraft but the massive six engine Antonov with its huge wingspan

An-32 - Shooting for an Air Force themed film. Were supposed to be flown out by an An-32 sitting on the ramp. Spent a good hour waiting onboard but didnt fly. For some reason, while the equipment did fly on the An-32 we were on, most of the crew were flown out on a Mil-8 helicopter.

Air Mauritius L1011 on the ramp. My uncle was on the maintenance staff and we got a tour of the Hangar and Ramp. Not sure who was training who, but Air India Cabin Crew in full uniform were onboard as well. Met the same crew later in the hotel later and the crew were behaving in a way that Mummyji back home would definitely not approve! ;)

L1049 - Was keen to see the interior of an old piston airliner from the 40's. But the example I visited had served in the Navy for decades and had its interior completely stripped out! Dissapointing!

Martin 404
Constellation
747-200
Jetstar
Convair 880
IL-14
B-25
and other various military things that I don't even know what they are. Thankfully, I have flown on most things I boarded.

Antonov An-124 is the big one (literally). Was not a museum example, saw one parked at the airport, yelled out to a guy (pilot) walking from the plane to the terminal and asked for a tour.

Been in a bunch at museums and airshows, but one I fondly remember from my early avgeekery days - when I was in elementary school, we took a field trip to do a behind the scenes tour at STL, including on a TWA L-1011 parked at one of the gates.

One of the NASA Shuttle Carriers that was in NY to drop of the Shuttle Enterprise for the Intrepid Museum. Actually could have flown back to Palmdale sans the Enterprise as my friend was Crew Chief for both the Carriers.

There were other aircraft many have mentioned but this is the one I will always remember.

A serval old fighters and airliners in museums but as far as operational aircraft go,

A medivac King Air,
And the most memorable a USAF C17 where I got to sit in the captains seat and have a good chat to the pilots. Both were at the Australian international airshow in Melbourne.

Ansett Australia B767-200 as a kid. I used to have a neighbour who worked as a shift manager, and whenever I went to BNE he would take me onboard between turn arounds and get me swag and drinks in those mini cans. Just never got to fly on the AN B762s.
