Could Amazon start passenger service?

Sat Mar 13, 2021 6:56 am

Just wondering people’s opinion if Amazon could tap into passenger service? I could see one of two business models. First, something similar to what AirTran did with having Ryan International doing the long haul flying on the A320 since AirTran didn’t have their own aircraft at the time to do so. Second, obviously would be just to have their own fleet.

As far as the route network goes I could see something where airports such as BNA, LAS, IAD, SEA, serve as focus cities.

It would be a terrible idea for the Amazon brand. Everyone loves to hate airlines.

Could they? Well, they have the resources to fund it. As Robert Crandall said, the best way to make a small fortune in the airline business is to start with a large one.

As a general rule, however, Amazon doesn't seek to gather together a giant pile of cash and light it on fire, which is pretty much what this idea would cause them to do.

So, could they? Absolutely. Would they? Personally, I think it's doubtful.

It would go against their business model to do that.

UPS had 727s that converted into passenger liners every weekend with RORO pallets of seats and quick change interiors. Main problem was the planes were so bashed up by tens of thousands of flights that they were all flying bananas and the interiors proved to not be interchangeable, so come Friday night and time for trips to the beach, the customised interiors were not necessarily in the same city as “their” planes. In the end it wasn’t worth the hassle.

Technically they already do (pax charter) in a roundabout way.. through their Atlas Air holdings and warrant options.

but no, Amazon will either create it's own full in house cargo ops or can the lot. Little point in them operating pax services.

And since the Amazon Air operation runs 7 days a week, there is no slack to take advantage of for pax ops.

As cargo pilots say, cargo doesn't complain! (Jokes aside, I think it wouldn't work because it goes against their business model and I've never really heard of any cases of cargo aircraft being converted to pax aircraft.)
Boeing is re-engining the 707 tonight, with Shinkai as the CEO and FLAIRPORT as the CFO. He has the 757 tooling in giant snowglobe that tracks flights.

No. The purpose of them getting into cargo ops was to lower shipping costs for purchases on Amazon. There's no scenario in which flying belching fleshbags around helps with that.

Didn’t Delta attempt to launch some sort of subscription service right before COVID happened?

Go on, tell us more about said business model.

You know, since they bought Whole Foods.

And become a television/movie production house.

And bought a home security company.

And started Prime Air.

And started producing its own electronic devices.

Amazon's goal is to be *THE* go-to for consumer spending. Travel is consumer spending.

Don't put the idea out to pasture.
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

I could be wrong. I remember when they just sold books. Maybe they would be interested in Super sonic travel. I don't know. I am just throwing that out there.

Well they’re already hated :P .Albeit for different reasons.

If the fares are good, the schedules are good, people will fly. It already has the massive revenue and brand recognition. Only question is if losing revenue on certain routes is worth the market share. Amazon may not care about its pride of running an airline over making sure it becomes the world‘s overlord in all that is consumption.
