Why are JetBlue Mint fares sky high for fall/winter right now?

Sun Apr 04, 2021 7:04 pm

First post, please move if this isn't the appropriate forum.

I've been looking to travel for the first time since March 2020 (the week before our first lockdown in San Francisco), to visit family in Ft. Lauderdale in October. Have flown Mint one way FLL-SFO in the past at under $600. a splurge for me, but well worth it. Now that I'm looking again, I'm noticing that while all other seats are offered at competitive prices, Mint fares for September/October/November are all more than $2,000 FT, even though planes are pretty much empty (the last time I checked a few flights, not a single Mint seat has been booked). So what would the rationale be for selling those seats at such high prices now? Trying to make money back lost during the last year? Do Mint fares ever come down once they're posted?

It's a great product, but with Delta, United, etc. all offering RT 1st class fares for around $1,000-$1,100, I'm tempted to book one of those for the first time. Not nearly as comfortable from what I hear, and Delta would require a connection, but I'm a bit anxious to fly again and whatever I take, am willing to spend more than I normally would to get some space. I do believe the airlines are generally safe, and I will be vaccinated - so it's more a psychological thing - a bit claustrophobic, so the back of the plane has always been a bit tough for me, though I usually do it. (SFO-FLL, I've usually chosen seat 6A, has good amount of room, so I might do that both ways if Mint doesn't come down and 1st on the others doesn't work out).

I've been loyal to JetBlue (well, honestly, since Virgin America disappeared), and would like to stick with it. Just curious about Mint fares and the possibility of fare decreases. I did ask jetBlue, and not surprisingly, did not get an answer.

Thank you!
