Your dream airline fleet

Tue Apr 06, 2021 4:06 pm

I think it has been a while since we had one of these, so why not start it up again!

Rules
- Have fun
- No 757 Max or ex- NW DC-9s allowed
- Talk about your dream airline's fleet and why you like the respective aircraft.
- Be as imaginative as you want, no matter how unrealistic it is! After all, it is just to have fun.

Since I'm a person who wishes it was 2012/11 again (though I was like 5 back then), here's my fleet circa 2011.

=Pax fleet=
10 Airbus A318s (leased to cover up for 737-500 phase out)
21 Airbus A300s (likely to be sold since its an orphan fleet that was acquired due to delays in the 767-300ER deliveries in the 1990s and kept only because of 787 delays)
19 Airbus A340-500s (to be replaced by 787-9s)
5 Airbus A340-600s (to be replaced by 787-9s)
45 Boeing 717-200 (used aircraft on order to phase out 737-500s)
33 Boeing 737-300 (to be flown until reaching 30 years of age or next D check, then I will place an order for the 737-700)
59 Boeing 737-500s (to be phased out)
TBD # of Boeing 737-700s
200 Boeing 737-800s
167 Boeing 757-200s
2 Boeing 757-300s (some more used a/c on order to replace 762s)
14 Boeing 767-200s (to be phased out)
71 Boeing 767-300ERs
50 Boeing 787-9s (options for 25 more)
20 Lockheed L1011 (what, I like it. Was supposed to be replaced by A340s in the 1990s but I got too sad and kept it. Will be replaced by 787-9s and removed from most international service)
20 Boeing 747-400s (10 to be retired and converted to freighters)
10 Boeing 747-8is (option for 5 more, unlikely to be activated)
30 Mcdonnell Douglas MD-90

=Cargo fleet=
35 Boeing 727-200Fs (to be retired starting in 2015)
30 Boeing 737-400F (to be acquired to replace 727-200Fs)
5 Boeing 747-100Fs (to be retired)
15 Boeing 747-200Fs (to be phased out and replaced with more MD-11Fs)
10 Boeing 747-400Fs (all converted from ex pax aircraft from my airline)
30 Boeing 747-8Fs (ordered new)
44 Douglas DC-8-70Fs (acquired because of low acquisition cost and reasonable fuel burn. To be flown till the early 2020s, and then replaced with 767Fs. Some frames will be retired to be scavenged for spares as time passes. Fitted with glass cockpits to improve longevity)
25 Mcdonnell Douglas MD-11Fs (More used aircraft to be acquired to retire all 747-200s/100s)

=Charter fleet=
2 L1011s (to be spared from retirement)
1 Boeing 747SP

I know, I should NOT run an airline, but I wanted to post this anyways. Excited to hear everyone else's dream fleets!

Let the fun begin!

How do you determine your fleet if you don't say what your schedules and routes are?

Hundreds of a220 neos to replace Southwest's Maxes ;) .

I'd be biased and have a fleet of MD80s and 757s (some 767 for long-haul/trunk routes), because they're my favorite. Not really optimal anymore because of fuel, but back in the 80s I'm sure those were very efficient aircraft.

Can't go wrong with simple one or two-type fleets. A stand-alone airline with only CRJs is bound to doom itself (Remember Via Air, new Midwest Express, etc).

While for "island hopping" -- the rumored D328eco if/when it eventually takes off..... :airplane:

Emphatically agree.

With a handful of A359s to reach far-off places.

If this is your fleet, then I’m buying a fleet of my own. Mine however will be fuel trucks, and we’ll gladly serve wherever you fly.

Yours would be a phenomenal fleet, but my goodness would it be an expensive one!

What if my dream airline is a skydiving company with a single DC-9?

If I had to start a scheduled airline, I'd begin with ATRs and A220s, expanding on bigger routes with the A321neo and longer routes with the A321XLR.

Don't know how fast the limit is for skydiving...but wouldn't a jumper risk getting sliced by the wing or being blown away by wake turbulence? Though with an old aircraft such as this, I bet the danger is inherent in the attraction and excitement. :scared:

A rear-door, skydiving version of Cessna's SkyCourier would be a much safer proposition IMO. :bouncy:

ATR72 Combis configured with 44 seats @32", full galley and an expanded cargo bay.

Flying short-medium length flights (upto 3 hours) at very high frequency. Min freq of service would be 3x going up to hourly shuttles on major routes.

Each base would have its own catering facility allowing for full hot meals in Economy. The catering facilities will also provide catering services to other carriers serving the base to augment income.

Back of paper calculations show that with prices within 5-10% of Southwest fares on these routes, we should still be profitable with 50% occupancy in cargo and pax loads. Not record windfall profits but sustainable profits. Perhaps other airlines will learn and reintroduce hot meals and decent seating as a competitive measure.

The numbers don't add up with the Dash8-400 Combi even though that has the rear cargo bay that we like - we checked. Test scheduling on routes out of DAL, we get ~half a segment every day due to the higher speeds but overall costs are much higher.

Wishlist: ATR comes up with a rear baggage compartment and front passenger cabin variant in the same size.

A couple of Boeing 747 with original 2-4-3 seating and a couple of L-1011:s. Flying transatlantic with superior service and with deviations to interesting sights at a ticket price triple the normal economy fare - the customer base would be aviation enthusiasts.

Hey guys,
I will bite too...
My Bunumuring Air fleet, based out of the Zaha Hadid-designed terminal at Nancy Bird Walton / Sydney West International but also operating out of Sydney Kingsford Smith ...

Regional routes and thinner FIFO routes:
* RJX (because in my world, BAE never stopped developing it! - but with A220s on order to replace them)
* Q400 (with Bunumuring Air the launch customer for the new Embraer turboprop to replace these and some RJXs)
* electric powered Dornier 328ecos

Golden Triangle routes:
* 737-10

Transcontinental and near-Asia/Pacific routes, including trunk TransTasman:
* 737-10 with lie flat business class seats

All other domestic Australian routes and thinner TransTasman, plus thicker FIFO routes:
* 737-8

Peak domestic and TransTasman routes:
* 787-3 (well, yeah - it WAS 'real' at one point!!!)

Thicker Asian routes including 'Bali Express' and African routes:
* 787-9
* 787-10

TransPacific(USA) and LHR one-stop routes:
* 747-8 (with 777-9s on order to replace them)

Euro non-stop and Canadian/South American routes (and seasonal South African routes):
* A350-1000

Freight routes:
* 747-8
* 777F (with 777XFs on order to replace these and the 747-8s)
* 737-800Freighters

Heritage flight:
* single examples of 747-400ER, Super VC10, 146-100, 727-200, Concorde, Constellation

Done.
Take care,
Bunumuring
