When where and why did you last fly pre Covid?

Tue Apr 13, 2021 8:23 am

This thread is really targeted at people like me who since Covid became an issue have been shielding/isolating/locking down - voluntarily or otherwise and therefore not travelling. However anyone can join in if they like.

My last flight before Covid was November 2019. It was Tirana to London Gatwick on a BA A320 after a touring holiday of Albania.

I always thought of Tirana as a bit of an off beat destination so I was surprised on both legs that the BA flight was pretty much full even in, on the way home, the four rows of Business class.

I never thought that would be the last time I would fly for over a year.

My last flight was LHR-LBA after a trip to Chennai at the end of Feb 2020. I remember the FAs coming through the cabin with a little can of spray to make sure that we were all saved from getting coronavirus...

I really miss traveling as I would be generally doing a short haul in Europe and a long haul trip about once every 6-8 weeks. I'm provisionally budgeted to start back again with a trip to Australia in October. we'll see...

OSL-CPH-OSL November 2019 for a business conference. 2020 was the first year in my life where I didn't fly even once, 2021 seems to be more of the same, sadly.

LAX-HKG in July 2020. Now if I leave, I'll have to quarantine in a hotel 21 days, so that's off the table. Was flying at least every other week before. But no way I will let it go a full year without any flights, I cannot let that happen - would depress me too much.

HKG-SYD on a Cathay 77W in J. Slightly disappointing service (BOS-HKG immediately prior was far better) but gee I miss it. We were hoping to spend last Christmas in Berlin, and desperately want to see our BOS family again.

MYR-CLT-IAD on AA at the end of February after visiting family. I've since made one trip in the COVID world, and like everyone else am itching to fly more as things begin to open up.

NRT-IST-SZG / BSL-IST-NRT with TK in December 2019 to meet-up with the in-laws and visit a bunch of xmas markets. Pretty average flights, pretty bad food.

Pre-COVID last flight Feb. 23, 2020, OKC-IAH after visiting son and daughter-in-law.

First flight since that was Mar. 18, 2021, IAH-STL and then Mar. 21, 2021, STL-IAH after visiting son/daughter-in-law who moved to STL.

Was going to take IAH-RSW flight this past Sunday, though after almost five hour delay due to the weather in south Florida, then the crew timing out I decided to cancel and go another time.

Pre-lockdowns, I flew LH on FCO-MUC, then transferred to UA for MUC-IAH. This was about February 10th. The first couple of cases of Covid had been reported in Italy, I recall the FCO-MUC flight being heavily populated by Chinese customers all wearing face masks who were connecting back to China at the end of their New Year's holidays.
Starting in the summer of 2020, I flew several more times, but then it was me wearing the face masks, and always just domestically in the US.

IAH-MSP-HND-MSP-IAH on DL in March 2020 for a two week visit to Japan. The shutdowns were starting while I was there and while it was annoying it was not my first visit to the country so I was okay with just making do with whatever was still open. I got back home just as things really started going crazy here in the USA.

Since then I've taken some domestic trips. HOU-DFW-FCA-DFW-HOU (AA) to visit Glacier NP in August 2020 and HOU-LAS-HOU (WN) to visit the parks in Utah.

In February 2020, just before COVID-19 reached Europe, I did a tour. Eindhoven - Vienna - Milan Malpensa - Bari - Budapest - Eindhoven. Three cities in one week (Malpensa was only a transfer, I didn't stay there for more than a few hours).

Totally no travel restrictions back then, it's hard to think about now. Happy memories.

It was the weekend of March 14/15 2020 on a spur-of-the moment roundtrip PHX-MSP-PHX. The MSP-PHX segment was my 757th logged flight and I specifically booked it to fly a 757 on that leg. I'd done so previously with the 747 and 737 but honestly didn't even think about it for the 717. The 707, 720, and 727 for those respective logged flights would have been near impossible in 2019/2020. I haven't flown since...so 13 months now...and I'm really feeling the itch to work my way towards #767 which is just 10 segments away.

That Sunday March 15th of 2020 was the day before Delta started reducing their schedules. Toilet paper, water, and sanitary wipes were already in short supply. My sister (who met me from LAS for the weekend) and I travelled around to a couple of stores and I bought up enough infant diapers to fill my roll-aboard for my grandson back in Phoenix. The whole craziness of the shortages was in full swing.

It’s amazing how mundane many of not most of these are. Mine was JAX-BNA on WN. Can’t tell you without consulting my log if it was a 73G or 738.

I've flown during COVID, but my last trip before March 2020 was STL-ATL and ATL-STL on Southwest (in January).

Since then, I've done:
STL-SAN, SAN-STL on Southwest
STL-ORD-ASE, ASE-ORD-STL on American
STL-SLC on Delta, SLC-STL on Southwest

My last precovid trip was to Japan in November 2019 flying SQ BNE-SIN-NRT and the reverse routing back on a mixture of A350-900/A380/777-300ER. In Japan I did a few domestic flights on a mix of JL/NH 777-200 (A and ER) and A350-900. As well as a Shinkansen trip between TYO and OSA.

On the return I had a 20 hour layover in Singapore, spent the time looking around the island and checking out Jewel. I remember bringing back a Kueh Lapis cake from Singapore which was a big hit with the family.

During 2020 I did a couple of small intrastate trips to the Whitsundays and Longreach, but it was the first time in about 20 years I hadn't left the state. So far nothing planned for 2021.

It was 11/28/19 and I was flying my 8-day-old son home to SFO from DTW (he is adopted). It was aboard a N851DN, a DL 739.

My last flights where on the first week of March, just before all lockdowns began in Europe.

Before starting my new job, I took a joyride on the IB A350 from MAD up to LHR, then the next day I flew the TP A321Neo down to LIS and A320 to BCN, then on that weekend my friends and I flew up to GVA on EasyJet to attend (the already cancelled) Geneva Auto Show, so we just walked around the city, ate, bought cheese and chocolate and flew back.

Not sure when I will fly again, maybe some domestic flight within Spain to start with, and we will see during summer.

SYD-HKG-CDG-MAN with CX, although last leg of the flight was with BE. This was in early January 2020, returning home after a month in Australia travelling as well as seeing some friends and relatives.

SAN-BNA-SAN on Southwest (non-stop, of course), for a wedding in Chattanooga.

We had a fabulous time walking around downtown Nashville that Friday afternoon in October, but eventually we had to depart the city. Interestingly, Hertz ONLY had a Camaro SS convertible available (no plain-jane sedans), so we zipped out of town with the top down!!

We had the usual excellent service from Southwest, and aside from being our last flight for nearly two years, there wasn't anything extraordinary about it. At least at the time...

My last flights were Jan 4 , 2020 when I flew back to Sydney after my Christmas trip to the States. EVV-DFW-SYD. I'm flying again next Friday, SYD-CFS for a 4 day weekend away from work and Sydney. And also it was needed to retain my QF Gold status.

Last flight I flew was from Orlando to San Diego via Denver for a convention in the end of September of 2019. The return trip was via Houston in first class. I would have flown for another convention in Amsterdam in May of 2020, but the convention itself was cancelled, and later on, the Amsterdam flight had been changed from departing out of O'Hare to departing out of Newark before itself being cancelled.

Last flights were BKK-KIX-BKK on TG onboard their A380(HS-TUF) and 77W(HS-TKK); it was probably my last A380 flights on TG, as they had put their entire A380 fleet on sale.

I flew DEN-IAD-TLV on a 737 and 77E respectively for UA. Spent a couple days in Israel with my friend. Then flew TLV-JNB on El Als retro 789. Then JNB-FRA-DEN on a LH 748 and UA 788 respectively. The first 3 legs were in Y, the LH flight was premium economy, and the 788 was CO-style BusinessFirst.

I had the option to fly SA JNB-FRA on an A359 and I would've flown them if it was an A340 and if I knew covid wasn't going to cripple them like it has. I didn't take that option because my only flight before on an A350 wasn't the best!

STL-ORD-MSN-ORD-STL on a CRJ7 for work purposes in late 2019, and during Covid a STL-EWR-STL on a CRJ7/550 also for work. I never really go on vacation so most of my flying is for work or a family function.

Probably Feb 2020, flew DEN-TUL-DEN (UA) on a daytrip to have lunch with my mom.

During the pandemic I flew DEN-PDX (UA) and PDX-SLC-DEN (DL) on a daytrip to buy a motorcycle and stashed it at the airport. That was Aug 31. A week later, Sep 7 I flew DEN-PDX (UA) to ride the bike back to Colorado.

It was fun. Definitely an endurance trip as it's not really an interstate bike. Suzuki DR650

I took it west to the ocean, Cannon Beach, before heading east. I had planned to do dispersed camping in the forests along the way but all of the forests along my route were closed due to wildfires, except for Teton (I was planning on a longer route). Teton was open but they were going to get with a huge snowstorm. So I gave up on the camping plan, and just shot straight down I-84 to SLC, and I-80 through Wyoming (rode through a light snowstorm for a while) and eventually made it down to Colorado. It's definitely a fun bike in the dirt, but not so much on the highway at 85 mph.

Ha, could have told you where that shot was without the caption. Glad you made it safely. Seems like one I would have probably just wussed out and grabbed a hotel for a day or two and waited out the weather.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I opted for a few hotels on the way in lieu of camping! I stayed in John Day, OR and Salt Lake City. :) The weather is part of the fun, although I don't like riding in the snow on the interstate. I was very close to pulling off in Laramie, WY and letting the snow storm pass, but at that point I was actually getting in front of the storm where I could see some patches of blue sky ahead. So I pressed on, and just as I was getting into Colorado the sun came out in full force and warmed me up. Made it home around 10PM (started at 8am in SLC that day).

YHZ-YUL-PTP and return, last week of January, 2020. Actual destination was Dominica, but connecting carriers serving DOM or DCF (via PTP, FDF, SXM, or BGI) would not honor my "designated travel partner" friend for nonrev, so we took the ferry from PTP instead. Had a great time in Dominica, we returned just as the first cases of COVID were reported in PTP, and it all went downhill from there. Happily, Dominica is one of the few sovereign nations on Earth to have reported zero COVID related fatalities. Hoping it stays that way.

March 10, 2020, YYZ-MIA-STX (AA). It was just before the lockdown started in Canada. Since then I flew: STX-STT-CLT-YYZ (July 4, 9K/AA)), YXU-YYZ-IAD (July 27, AC), IAD-YYZ-YXU (August 1, AC), YXU-YYZ-BDA (August 6, AC), BDA-YYZ-YXU (August 13, AC), YXU-YYZ-IAD (August 18, AC), IAD-YYZ-YXU (September 19, UA/AC), YXU-YYZ-ORD-DEN-ABQ (September 22, AC/UA), ABQ-DEN-IAD-YYZ-YXU (October 17, UA/AC), YYZ-CLT-STT-STX (October 26, AA/9K), STX-CLT-YYZ (December 17, AA), YXU-YYZ-EWR-ORD-LEX (January 4, AC/UA), YXU-YYZ-ORD-LEX (February 8, AC/UA), LEX-ORD-BWI (February 27, UA). All flights were for work. If everything goes as planned, the next one should be BWI-ORD-BUF (UA and driving from BUF to YXU), followed by YYZ-ATL-STX (DL).

Although I did have a few flight during COVID19-times (one of them at the peak of the first lock down in Germany – I've never seen Munich airport this empty, it was like a scene from a horror movie), I was lucky enough to have some normal traveling done in early 2020 before COVID19 hit hard. Traveled to Hong Kong, Tokyo (+Sapporo) and Algiers in January and February. Then the COVID-related pause. A booked flight to Jeddah in April has been cancelled a week before departure (besides that, my visa application got rejected anyway). So my next flight was in May to Tel Aviv. That one was different. Only possible flight was via Belarus, as hardly any flights went at all from Europe. Some impressions from MUC on that day: https://imgur.com/a/xV6xuyx

The return flight was in beginning of August, where I could fly Lufthansa again (and got lucky to have my first A321neo-flight – the last airplane in the whole Lufthansa fleet I haven't flown on yet). And that was probably my last business trip ever as shortly after that I quit my job in field service. All flights since then were and will be private. My last flights were in October: via Amsterdam to Lyon, then to Geneva, and from there to Berlin-Schönefeld (shortly before they changed to BER). So now for half a year I haven't boarded any airplane at all. A flight pause as long as this I haven't had in six years.

When my next flight will be? Don't know. There is a domestic trip in Germany planned beginning of August to attend a fair in DUS. However, it is not certain, that the fair will be held at all. Besides that, I still have a booking to Japan open, but without a fixed date, as the borders to Japan are still closed for tourists and my resident visa is cancelled.

Had a ton of Skymiles to burn at the time so in January 2020 I did a XNA-ATL-XNA day trip to plane spot and check out the DL museum for the first time. Both flights on CR9s. Was a pretty good day!

March 16th 2020....LAX-JFK on Jetblue in Mint. Was right when Coronavirus started to hit hard...My wife and I had good friends getting married in Orange County that weekend (my wife was maid of honour) and they called on the previous Thursday, the day we were due to fly JFK-LAX and check to see if we were still coming. At that point it was right on the cusp of things hitting hard but it was laughable that we wouldn't travel. There were people at JFK who wore masks and gloves and it was a bit weird at that point. The wife and I used to wipes to clean the seat at boarding but that was about it.

Flying back to NYC just a few days later was very weird. Masks were still not really a thing but LAX was emptyyyyy. I've never seen World Way at LAX so empty in the middle of the day. On the flight back the FA come up to each passenger and just wanted to talk because he was due to fly JFK-SFO and the Mint cabin had no passengers booked. Mint was pretty full but the main cabin was maybe 10% occupancy...

I took 27 flights in the first 2.5 months of 2020 and that was the last time I flew. My wife gave birth in August and even though I feel safe about flying with a young daughter it's not ideal. :( It's the longest I've gone without flying by a very wide margin and I miss it greatly...

My last pre-Covid flight was In October 2019, on my way to my Wedding in Maui, DEN-OGG on a 772 with UA. I never thought that we would be in a pandemic at all during that trip.

My last trip was in November 2019 to Vancouver BC for a conference.
Routing was CAI-FRA-YVR on the bound on LH (A321 and Boeing 744). On the return I flew YVR-YYC-LHR-CAI (A320, 787, 777). On the FRA-YVR (744) and YYC-LHR (787-9) legs, I was in Premium Economy. Made a huge difference in terms of comfort and saved me a lot of time that would have otherwise been spent recovering from the trip. The worst part was the 2 am departure out of Cairo on Lufthansa, with a 5 am arrival in FRA.. You don't get enough time to sleep properly on the flight.
Really miss those days!
