Is Aeroflot still planning to fly to Singapore?

Fri Feb 26, 2021 1:36 am

Is Aeroflot still planning to fly to Singapore? I checked the SVO airport wikipedia and it seems they only plan to launch BOM (Mumbai) and Osaka (KIX). They should launch it as SIN has higher J class yields than any other city in Asia with HKG (Hong Kong) 2nd. Aeroflot flies to literally every city in Central Asia, Eastern and Western Europe with the exception of Ukraine (political conflict).

You asked pretty much the same question 2 years ago.

Singapore is a big market, but the airport's numbers are inflated because it is a major Singapore Airlines and Star Alliance hub, and to an extent also Oneworld on routes to Australia. Aeroflot is a Skyteam member, they have next to no feed from transferring passengers in Singapore. Skyteam barely touches Australia and New Zealand.

And no, they don't "literally fly to every city in central asia, eastern europe and western europe". They fly to most capital cities in Europe like almost every other airline, but barely touch secondary cities.

well HKG is a big market because Russians can come without a visa. BKK is a huge market, they are tons ofRussians living/visiting Thailand. But I am not so sure that Singapore (and the rest of SEA besides Thailand) is really a destination for Russians. Prior to SARS they used to serve SIN via BKK with their Il-96. They even had 5th freedom right

Is Aeroflot still going to launch their Asian expansion (BOM, KIX and SIN)?

Thu Apr 15, 2021 2:06 pm

Pre-COVID Aeroflot announced they would be expanding their Asian route network to Mumbai/BOM, Osaka/KIX and Singapore/SIN. These routes have high O&D to Europe (Both Eastern and Western) and Aeroflot provides a low cost option. The Wikipedia page of SVO airport is out of date. Is SU still going to launch these 3 cities?

Aeroflot, back in the 60s and 70s (and probably also the 80s) was the equivalent for the Europe / Far East to what Icelandic Airlines (now Icelandair) was for the U.S. / Europe market: a discounted way to travel without the frills of full-service carriers. They used to have their IL-62s and TU-154s shuttle people late in the morning or early in the afternoon from FCO / CDG / FRA / LHR / CPH to SVO, in order then to fly them to HND at night on their IL-62s. Daily flight from Western Europe and about three daily flights a night to Japan. Most definitely, they built a niche market back then that lasted until the fall of the Soviet Union..

IIRC SU also did very well on the SIN-India sector with their IL-62's in the 80's.
